Filmed from her beautiful garden at Glebe Cottage in Devon, Carol Klein will return tonight for the second episode in her new five-part series, Autumn Gardening with Carol Klein. This season, she’s inspiring Britons and sharing her advice on how to tend to your garden in autumn. Whether you’re a complete novice or a professional, have a balcony or a country garden, Carol’s advice is for all.

On tonight’s episode, Carol shared how to correctly harvest pumpkins and squash.

She showed viewers her impressive squash patch which included two pumpkins.

Carol said it’s important when cutting squash to ensure you don’t cut the supporting stem.

She explained: “When you’re harvesting any squash or pumpkins, don’t cut this supporting stem that goes directly into the fruit.

“Because, if you do, it can rot during the winter and go right back into the inside of the fruit.

“I’m going to separate it [the pumpkin] first of all from the plant.

“Now I’ve got that stem, I’m going to make a ’T-junction’ and that means I can come along here and they’re detached.”

Carol trimmed the pumpkin stalk so it left a ’T’ shape of stalk at the top of the pumpkin.
