Gardening expert Carol Klein’s home in Chittlehamholt near Umberleigh is a beautiful, idyllic cottage in the heart of the British countryside. While her garden may look breathtaking now, it hasn’t always looked so pristine. On ITV’s This Morning, Carol explained to presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford how she managed to transform her garden from a field into a work of art.

The gardener appeared via video call in her greenhouse.

She wore a brown jacket and a teal scarf layered around her neck.

The greenhouse appeared to be filled with shelves of stunning pink and purple flowers.

In the background, a large green field and a trellis can be seen.

Ruth explained to viewers how Carol and her husband Neil had bought the cottage around 40 years ago.

The presenter asked Carol: “Tell us about Glebe Cottage – why you fell in love with it, what was it like, what was the garden like then?”

The gardener explained that “all she wanted” from a home was a garden.

She continued: “Well, I used to teach in London and I got a job teaching down here.

“They were trying to get us to buy a little terraced house but I didn’t care about the house. I just wanted a garden!

“Then we found this place and it’s just perfect.”

Photos of the garden before Carol renovated it flashed up on the screen.

The photos showed an overgrown field with trees and long grass, overgrown bushes and rubble.

Carol said the actual house itself “still isn’t done” but that the garden “isn’t looking too bad”.

Ruth asked whether the garden was “in a state” when they bought the property.

Carol replied: “There wasn’t a garden! There were lots and lots of old cars, an old shed – and I had to get in there.

“We took all the old cars out apart from one of them which was a Morris Minor.

“The JCB couldn’t pull it out so we knocked it down and we planted a tree on top of it.

“The tree is doing beautifully well.”

A photo on the screen showed a huge tree with pale leaves and what looks like blossom on it.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
