The benefits come from polyphenols – plant compounds found in hops, barley and yeast – helping to fight off a host of life threatening conditions. Keeping the right balance reduces the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart problems, cancer and dementia.

Professor Ana Faria, of NOVA University in Lisbon, Portugal, said: “When more types of bacteria are present, people tend to have a lower chance of developing chronic diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes. And beer contains compounds, such as polyphenols, as well as microorganisms from its fermentation, that could impact the variety of microbes in the human gut.”

Hop polyphenols are responsible for the delicious aroma and bitterness of ale. The only downside to the research is it recommends just one lager daily. Any more and you may lose the benefits. However, non-alcoholic beer is just as good for you.

To celebrate the news, the good folk at Beers of Europe in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, shared some favourite North American lagers from their outstanding range. With travel still a faff, delays at airports and cancellations, it’s still possible (thank goodness) to tour the beer world from the comfort of your own home.

And if anyone complains, you can tell them it’s all for the good of your gut.

Enjoy!
