Famous in America for its square hamburgers and sea salt fries, Wendy’s is making its return to the UK tomorrow. Opening its doors in locations across the country, the fast food restaurant will service food items like chicken nuggets, burgers, baked potatoes as well as breakfast options.

After setting up in the UK in the 1980s and 1990s, Wendy’s closed all of its stores in 2001.

The fast food chain is the third biggest burger chain in the world, making it a welcomed return for people in the UK.

Wendy’s previously announced that it was going to open a few stores to begin with before nationwide rollout.

The first location where Wendy’s will open is in Reading.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Our first location is in Reading and we are exploring additional opportunities in the London area.

“The brand is excited to enter the UK with company-owned and operated restaurants this year, and we are looking for franchisees to grow with us across the United Kingdom.”

There are also two more locations coming, but they are thought to be opening towards the end of the year.

These locations will be Stratford and Oxford as well as more sites being explored, with a total of five opening this year.

The company has said it hopes to have around 400 branches in total.

A statement said: “The UK launch will spearhead a European-wide expansion as Wendy’s looks to build on strong growth on the other side of the Atlantic, where the brand last year dethroned Burger King to become the No 2 player in the US hamburger market.”

The chain will also be partnering with food delivery service Uber Eats to bring delicious food to people at home too.

What can customers expect to find on the Wendy’s food menu?

Some of its famous food items will be on the menu as well as launching some exclusive foods for its British customers.

Wendy’s menu will include Dave’s Single Burger, Avocado Chicken Salad, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, Veggie Bites, The Veggie Stack as well as an Avocado Veggie Salad.

Real Breast Fillet Chicken Nuggets will also be available as well as a number of salad options including a Chicken Caesar salad and Apple Cranberry salad.

For side options there will be baked potatoes, Baconator fries and Chilli con Carne.

Famous for its Frosty dessert, UK customers will also be able to pick up the signature frozen dairy dessert.

A breakfast menu will also be available until 10:30am and will include foods like the Breakfast Baconator, Croissant Sandwiches and the Classic Egg and Cheese Sandwich.

SVP, UK and Canada Managing Director Paul Hilder, said: “We can’t wait for the British public to try our menu when the doors open to our Reading restaurant on June 2.

“The signature Wendy’s items that fans know and love are there, but you will also see a few new additions just for our British customers.

“With Wendy’s you can guarantee you’ll get freshly prepared, high quality ingredients in everything we serve. Get ready for the best burger out there – square, fresh off the grill and made to order.”
