Waitrose to start selling onions that won't make you cry

01/12/2022

We all know how frustrating chopping an onion can be as eyes begin to sting and water.

Soon it won’t have to be this way, thanks to a new onion product coming to market.

Sold as being ‘for tearlessness’, the first onions of this kind are about to launch in Waitrose.

The sweet onion is grown in the US by Sunions and according to Waitrose, the mild flavour means they’re ideal for home cooking and use in a mix of meals and salads.

Those with sensitive eyes won’t need to endure the irritation that comes with cooking with onions for much longer.

Paul Bidwell, an onion buyer at Waitrose told Femail: ‘We understand how a-peeling tearless onions are to our customers which is why we’re delighted to launch Sunions.’

He added they’re ‘ideal for taking the tears out of the kitchen, the sweetness of this type of onion lends itself perfectly to a variety of dishes, from salads to hot.’

Launching on January 18, they’ll be available online and in stores.

So what’s different about them?

Regular onions produce an irritant called syn-propanethial-S-oxide, which stimulates the eyes, causing sulfenic acid to build up – this creates tear build up and release.

It’s most potent when at room temperature, which is why you’ll likely cry while chopping onions in the kitchen.

The release of the chemical is actually a defense mechanism to being cut.

Some people have more sensitive lachrymal glands than others, which is why not everyone is affected by chopping onions in the same way.

Sunions work differently – they’re a natural cross-breed with a lower concentration of lachrymatory-factor synthase.

This means they don’t cause our eyes to create as much acid.

Though they’re not genetically modified, they’re the product of more than three decades of farming, research and development.

Their website reads: ‘Sunions are currently grown only in Nevada and Washington.

‘Their tearless quality and incredible flavour profile that is consistently sweet, mild and crunchy is all thanks to a tightly-controlled brand promise that Sunions must be certified to be both tearless and sweet before shipping to grocery stores.’
