The 'bartender red flags' that give an amateur away in a heartbeat

03/20/2023

Clocked your bartender scooping ice with the glass? It’s an amateur move to look out for next time you’re out on the town, apparently.

The Pins Social Club in Liverpool has revealed the dos and don’ts of behind the bar etiquette, which they say staff should observe when serving up your pint or cheeky marg.

The video on ‘bartender red flags’ has wracked up more than 2.7million views, sparking some hot debate in the comments.

So, why is scooping ice with the glass so bad? Well, if the glass breaks then all that ice is useless.

It’s also just not ideal when it comes to hygiene if your hand is touching all the ice, with many viewers branding it ‘gross’.

Coming in as the second red flag is measuring out alcohol with a measuring cup.

We have to admit we don’t really see the issue with this one, but one TikTok user commented: ‘If I see a bartender using that measuring thing. I’m out.’

Other users took less of an issue with this one writing: ‘Using a small measuring cup is not a red flag, it’s consistency which means you’re not being over or under poured. Good for the customer and the business.’

No ‘bev naps’ was also a major red flag apparently, which is where the drink is served with a napkin under the glass.

But a lot of bartenders claimed they were taught the opposite and that ‘bev naps’ weren’t needed for stemmed glasses.

One user even commented: ‘Bev naps are dumb’.

Hot pint glasses were also a no-no. And we completely agree that there is nothing worse than wanting a nice cold pint and getting it in a hot glass.

How are you meant to enjoy a pint of Guinness if it’s warm?

Same goes for a glass of white wine. However, we totally empathise with busy bar staff on this one.

If a bar is packed the likelihood is is that staff are washing glasses as quickly as they are getting used up. So, unless you want to wait 20 minutes for a cold glass, you may have to suck this one up.

Leaning on the bar was also a designated red flag with the caption stating: ‘If you’ve got time to lean you’ve got time to clean.’ Brutal.

Many bartenders slammed this in the comments. One wrote: ‘Created by a manger who spends half their shift sitting in the office.’

Another commented: ‘Let me lean on the bar, we’re on our feet for longer than anyone’s office job.’

This next red flag we can totally agree with: ignoring customers. Need we say more?

Red flag number seven is a pretty gross one: hands around the rim of the glass.

This comes under basic hygiene. If you’re going to be drinking out of a glass, you want to know that no one has touched where you’re putting your mouth.

The penultimate red flag is sneaking the dregs of the cocktails, while the ninth and final red flag was skimming a pint!

Some of these habits are pretty annoying, but others seem a touch harsh. Which one got under your skin the most?
