Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons issue urgent food recalls amid safety fears

Supermarkets will sometimes have to recall certain foods or batches of products when they are discovered to pose a danger to customers. In recent weeks a number of urgent food recalls have been announced, with products including milk, kale, chicken and rice in the list of foods that should not be eaten due to safety fears including a risk of salmonella. The recalled items are available at Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons as well as smaller supermarkets including Iceland and Waitrose – here’s a full list of what to check for in your cupboards.  

Iceland

Iceland has recalled its own brand Chip Shop Curry Chicken Breast Toppers and its Southern Fried Chicken Popsters, because salmonella has been found in the products and it is unsafe to eat. 

The recall applies to certain packs – shoppers should check their products for the best before date and pack size, and if affected they can return them to the store for a refund or contact Iceland Customer Care line on 0800 328 0800 and select option 2.

The affected Chip Shop Curry Chicken Breast Toppers packs are 400g with best before dates of February 27 2021, March 17 2021 and April 8 2021.

The affected Southern Fried Chicken Popsters packs are 220g and have a best before date of April 4 2021.

Waitrose 

The supermarket is recalling its own brand Waitrose & Partners Chicken Satay with Sweet Chilli Sauce. 

The affected packs contain the incorrect dip, which means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to fish and/or peanuts due to it being undeclared on the label. 

The affected packs are 85 grams with the best before date of August 17, 2020.

Anyone who has bought the product can return it to a local Waitrose store for a full refund, or contact Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 881 Option 4.

The relevant allergy organisations have also been alerted to the risk to help warn those with serious allergies.

Sainsbury’s 

Sainsbury’s is recalling one of its longlife milk products due to a “possible microbiological contamination”.

The By Sainsbury’s semi-skimmed less than 2 percent fat UHT milk is being recalled as a precaution and should not be consumed by shoppers. 

The affected cartons are the one litre packs with best before dates of December 28, 2020 and December 29, 2020.

The potential contamination could lead to spoilage and make it unsafe to drink, so the supermarket is asking that customers return it to stores for a refund – or shoppers can contact Sainsbury’s careline on 0800 636262.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons

The Big Four supermarkets are recalling specific pouches of Uncle Ben’s Brown Basmati rice. 

The product is made by Mars Food UK and is stocked in the main supermarkets, as well as on Ocado and in independent stores, so any shoppers who have bought the branded rice should check their cupboards. 

The ready-to-heat rice pouches are being recalled over safety fears as they may contain pieces of glass. 

The Food Standards Agency issued an alert which stated: “If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund, or please dispose of it and contact Uncle Ben’s consumer care line on 0800-952-1234 for a full refund.”

The affected pouches are 250g and will have the following best before dates:

Co-op

Co-op has issued an urgent recall and warning for its Co-op Sliced Curly Kale.

It’s been discovered that the product might contain thistle (a spiky weed) and therefore not safe to eat. 

The affected packs are 160g and have a best before date of anything between August 4, 2020 and August 11, 2020. 

Customers should return the product to their nearest Co-op store for a refund or contact the store on 0800 0686 727 or [email protected].
