Mums share easy trick for checking if your flour is self-raising or plain

You’re either going to be baffled by the need for this trick, or you’ll find it life-changing.

It all depends on whether you’re the type of person who just keeps their flour in a bag, rolling up the opening between uses, or the type who decants their flour into jars or plastic containers.

If you’re the latter, you’ll know the frustration of realising you haven’t given your storage a clear label, and so you now have no clue if the flour inside is self-raising or plain.

Of course, this will always happen *just* when you need flour for a recipe. Such is the way of the world.

But if you find yourself in this predicament, there’s no need to worry.

A mum from New South Wales asked for help in a Facebook group after she forgot to label her flour, and loads of other mothers jumped in to share their tricks.

One person suggested the water trick – whereby you put a teaspoon of the unidentified flour in a glass of water.

‘Self raising flour will bubble up to the surface, plain flour will stay sunk,’ she explained.

If you don’t fancy that method, there are some other techniques to check your flour.

Some people recommended dipping a finger into the flour and tasting it, noting that ‘self raising flour has a tingle on your tongue while plain flour doesn’t’. That’s because of the baking powder. Smart.

Others suggested adding a squeeze of lemon or some vinegar to a spoonful of the flour to see if it bubbles – if it does, it’s self-raising.

Again, this might seem like one of those pointless bits of information you don’t need to know, but just wait until the next time you’ve got some mystery flour. You’ll be glad you’ve got these tricks up your sleeve.
