Man eats raw onion, sardines and wasabi to show Covid-19 has taken away taste

A 30-year-old man has filmed himself doing a taste test, only he can’t actually taste anything.

Russell Donnelly, from New Jersey, tested positive for Covid-19, and with one of the symptoms being loss of taste, decided to have some fun with it.

Encouraged by friends, Russell made a TikTok video eating foods with a strong taste that we might not normally be able to stomach on their own.

Russell ate a raw onion, ginger paste, sardines and drank a shot of lemon juice.

While that would make most of us squirm, Russell – who only reported a loss of taste and smell as Covid-19 symptoms – was unflinching.

His TokTok video has since gone viral, with many amused at the things Russell could consume.

More than 17 million tuned in to see Russell admit he tasted ‘nothing’ as he bit into the pungent foods.

Russell said in the video: ‘What’s going on guys, I am currently Covid-19 positive and I can’t taste anything. Everyone keeps telling me to try to eat some nasty stuff but I don’t have any nasty stuff at my house so I figured I would just eat some stuff that would be strong or pungent’.

The 30-year-old then bit into an onion like an apple, before downing it with some lemon juice and a spoonful of ginger paste.

He concluded ‘it’s a crazy virus’.

Why do you lose your sense of taste when you have coronavirus?

An international team of researchers led by neuroscientists at Harvard Medical School said that the olfactory cell types in the upper nasal cavity are most vulnerable to infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

This is why loss of taste and smell are the first indicators of the virus.

According to the NHS, Your sense of smell may go back to normal in a few weeks or months.

Since the first video blew up, Russell has been trying out all sorts of food combinations for viewers’ entertainment.

He tried famously bad combo orange juice after toothpaste, with wackier creations including wasabi, pasted into Oreos.

While he couldn’t taste anything, Russell did experience some discomfort from eating the spicy paste on his sinuses and stomach.

Viewers commented that the TikToker was ‘creating a deadly fart’, and asked what would happen if his taste came back in the middle.

Others dared him to down hard liquor.

Russell’s taste test isn’t the first to go viral on TikTok. Many others, particularly students living in uni accommodation, have undertaken the challenge.
