Luckily, there are a few ways to extend the life of the extra pasta sauce and the best way is to store it in glass bottles, Tupperware or any other container as long as it is airtight.

Once the container is sealed, it can be kept in the fridge and this way, it will last at least four or five days, according to Pasta Evangelists.

However, if the sauce is not going to be used within the week, it can also be placed in the freezer.

It can be kept in small containers but if you have limited space, the sauce can also be placed in freezer bags.

Freezing the condiment will “keep its authentic flavour for up to six months,” the pasta experts said.

They also noted that it is always best to consume the sauce within one to two days unless frozen to ensure “the fresh flavours at their finest”.

Make sure the sauce is defrosted at room temperature for a few hours to ensure the best results, instead of using the microwave to defrost it.

Pasta Evangelists revealed that generally speaking, “tomato-based sauces used for dishes like spaghetti alla puttanesca, remain fresher for longer” due to the acidity of the tomatoes acting as a natural preservative.

Dairy-based sauces such as carbonara, on the other side, are best enjoyed straight away.

On Tiktok, user @plantbasebeauty shared a clever hack to store leftover tomato sauce while saving space in the freezer.

She explained this was an “easy tip to reduce your tomato can sauce and save money”, and used an ice cube tray to do this.

When there is leftover sauce after cooking, and “you don’t know what to do with it”, she “usually saves it in a jar”.

However, if she knows she won’t be using it that same week, she fills an ice cube tray with it.

Any regular ice cube tray can be used for this. Then, place it in the freezer and this way you can reuse it and it lasts “up to six months,” she claimed.

Other social media users took to the comments to praise the hack with Laura saying she loved this as “there is no waste here”.

Another one commented that it was “a great idea” and that she was going to try it.

Another food that goes off very quickly is cream cheese and a similar hack is recommended to make it last longer.

The best way to prolong the cream cheese’s lifespan for longer is to keep it in the freezer.

When stored this way, cream cheese can last for approximately two months.

Always wrap the cream cheese properly and put it in a zip-lock bag or airtight container to slow down the oxidation process.

According to Healthline, cream cheese and other cream cheese products “can be frozen in their original packaging or stored in an airtight container for up to two months”.

“Once you’re ready to use the cream cheese, simply thaw it in the refrigerator overnight and add it to recipes like soups, sauces, dips, casseroles, and baked goods,” they explained.
