I Visited Ireland And Tried All The Snacks They Don't Sell In The States

08/26/2019

Hi food lovers of the internet! I’m Farrah. When I’m traveling, I get really curious to see how the snacks in other countries differ from the ones where I live (which is California!!) On a recent trip to Ireland/Northern Ireland, I tried a few things that I haven’t seen in my area before, and here’s whatcha need to know!

If you’re wondering, I visited Dublin, Belfast, Galway, and Kilkenny. I know there are more cities that probably offer different selections, but this is what I found!

1.Cheese and onion chips:

Cheese and onion is as common of a flavor as nacho cheese is in America. A popular Irish brand that sells this flavor (among others) is Tayto, which I also tried! It basically tastes as you would expect…like cheese and onion. There’s a strong taste of onion though, so if you’re not a fan then stay away.

2.Indian tandoori chicken masala Pringles:

I hadn’t seen this flavor of Pringles in California, so don’t come for me in the comments if it’s available!!! Although it’s not as good as eating chicken masala, it’s pretty damn rich and flavorful in spice.

3.Cadbury Boost:

Cadbury is kind of a thing in America but not as much of a thing as it is in the UK. I’m not a super big fan of milk chocolate (SORRY), but this is filled with a caramel-y biscuit crunch that saved it for me. I’m a fan.

4.Cadbury Curly Wurly:

Curly Wurly is another Cadbury product I’d never heard of before. It’s a fun shape (kind of like braided/twisted chocolate) despite the fact that it’s only chocolate and caramel. It’s a little too chewy for me, but probably a crowd pleaser for caramel lovers.

5.Daim:

Daim chocolate is thin, crunchy almond butter toffee with a milk chocolate coating. There’s a lot of good texture and flavor happening here, so I give it a solid A.

6.Nestle Aero peppermint:

Aero is chocolate that’s filled with little air bubbles that makes for a fun, melty texture when you eat it. Maybe I should have felt ripped off by having holes in my chocolate, but I really liked it?!?

7.Cadbury Roundie:

This Cadbury product is just milk chocolate and wafers — two things I’m not a huge fan of. In my opinion, it was just OK. But if you like Kit Kats, you’ll probably enjoy this.

8.Kinder Bueno chocolate bar:

I saw this chocolate EVERYWHERE. And now I get the hype. It’s a light, crunchy chocolate bar filled with hazelnut, and it’s delicious.

9.Maltesers:

If you’re like, “that looks like Woopers,” then you’re kind of right. In my opinion, Maltesers were softer to chew than Woopers, which is why I think I like them more.

10.Curry sauce chips:

The texture of these chips are almost like Wavy Lays, and you absolutely taste the curry flavor when you eat ’em! I wish more snacks in the US were curry-flavored, but maybe I’m not looking hard enough.

11.Twisted strawberry Diet Coke:

It’s true that Coke has released a TON of flavors, so it’s possible I missed seeing this back home. It definitely had a strong taste of strawberry, but to be honest I think I prefer cherry better.

12.Frosties:

I’m not sure why Ireland calls Frosted Flakes “Frosties,” but they are basically the same thing minus the name!

13.Doritos cool original:

Yes, I know cool ranch Doritos exist — but I needed to note what they call them in Ireland: COOL ORIGINAL. There was a tad bit less flavor dust on them, but they were still good.

14.Doritos tangy cheese:

Remember when I noted that we have a lot of nacho cheese flavors in the US? Well, the closest I found in Ireland was TANGY cheese. In an orange bag, not red. But it was pretty similar-ish to our nacho flavor.

15.Doritos chili heatwave:

The Doritos I *did* spy in a red bag were chili heatwave, not nacho cheese! I want to say we might have this flavor too, but I’m not sure. I liked the kick of spice that they had!

16.Doritos flame grilled steak:

And finally, the flame grilled steak Dorito! The bag says this is a new product, so it’s possible that we have them in the US too. It taste like a burst of steak seasoning in your mouth.
