Omelettes come in all different forms and some are more difficult than others to make, but the basic omelette we all know and love is very simple in theory. However, most of us still end up burning the egg and getting the omelette either stuck to the pan or deformed in shape. Express.co.uk reveals how to make an omelette and three easy omelette hacks to ensure the process runs smoothly.
How to make an omelette
BBC Good Food’s omelette recipe is foolproof. All you need is:
- 3 eggs, beaten
- 1 tsp sunflower oil
- 1 tsp butter
- Whatever fillings you want, from cheese to vegetables
Season the beaten eggs well with salt and pepper.
Heat the oil and butter in a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat until the butter has melted and is foaming.
Pour the eggs into the pan, tilt the pan ever so slightly from one side to another to allow the eggs to swirl and cover the surface of the pan completely.
Let the mixture cook for about 20 seconds then scrape a line through the middle with a spatula.
Tilt the pan again to allow it to fill back up with the runny egg. Repeat once or twice more until the egg has just set.
At this point you can fill the omelette with whatever you like – some grated cheese, sliced ham, fresh herbs, sautéed mushrooms or smoked salmon all work well.
Scatter the filling over the top of the omelette and fold gently in half with the spatula. Slide onto a plate to serve.
3 easy omelette hacks
Cut lines with a chopping board
When you’ve put the eggs in the pan and they’ve started to set, use the edge of a thin chopping board to make one line down the middle of the omelette but stopping at the centre.
Imagine that’s a line between two-quarters of the omelette and then place each topping in the four quarters of the omelette.
You can then fold the quarter next to the line-up and on top of the quarter above it, and this half on top of the other side until your omelette is folded into a near little quarter.
If you struggle to flip or fold an omelette and like the inside of your omelette very well cooked, there’s a really easy hack.
All you need to do is turn on the grill and make the omelette as usual with the toppings.
Don’t fold the omelette, just put the pan on the grill with the door open and the handle outside of the grill.
Leave it for a few minutes to cook what is going to be the inside of your omelette and then remove it and fold the omelette.
You can make an omelette sandwich in a pan and it’s really simple and makes the folding process easier because the omelette is sturdier.
Put the eggs in the pan as usual and then add two slices of bread to the pan with their crusts cut off.
Once this has cooked, turn it over and start adding fillings to the other side of the bread.
Fold the omelette in half, and there you have an omelette sandwich!
