Home Bargains issues urgent food recall over inaccurate labelling

Home Bargains, owned by bargain conglomoront TJ Morris, stock products from Oxfordshire Tea Company, and now the brand is recalling its Butter Shortbread as it was incorrectly labelled as “Gluten Free” when it contains wheat. The wheat (gluten) could pose a potential health risk to those with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, the Food Standard Agency (FSA) warned.

In a statement released by the FSA, it warns: “TJ Morris is recalling Oxfordshire Tea Co. Butter Shortbread because the allergy labelling is inaccurate. 

“It contains wheat (gluten) and it has been incorrectly labelled as ‘Gluten Free’. 

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

“This product is only sold at Home Bargains stores.”

This product contains wheat (gluten) making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

All best before date codes of 119g Oxfordshire Tea Co. Butter Shortbread products are affected.

TJ Morris has taken action to right their wrong by issuing an urgent product recall from customers and have contacted the relevant allergy support organisations.

The organisation will then get in touch with members about the recall.

The bargain giant has also issued a “point-of-sale” notice to its customers, the Food Standard Agency said.

The purpose of the notice is to explain to customers why the product is being recalled and to tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

TJ Morris (Home Bargains) released the following statement: “Oxfordshire Tea Co. Butter Shortbread is being recalled as it incorrectly states ‘Gluten Free’ and the product contains wheat (gluten).

“Any customer in possession of this product who has a wheat allergy or intolerance, or who wish to return this product can return it to any Home Bargains store, where a full refund will be given.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”

Those who have bought the product are being urged not to eat the food to avoid a risk.

Instead, they can return it to the store it was bought where they will be given a full refund for the item.

The advice provided by the Food Standard Agency states: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat (gluten) do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”

No other TJ Morris products are known to be affected.

Earlier this week, Sainsbury’s was subject to an urgent food recall also, as Sainsbury’s Tomato & Basil Soup was discovered to contain wheat (gluten) but was undisclosed on the product label.

Meaning the product posses a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

The packs that are affected are Sainsbury’s Tomato & Basil 600g soup with a best before date of 08-December-2019.
