Halloween 2019: Spooky food, drink, recipes – When to get Starbucks Phantom Frappuccino

It’s spooky season, and there are Halloween themed products across most shops. While carving a pumpkin is fun (see Express.co.uk’s guide here) getting creative with food and drink can also inspire the festive spirit. Below are a series of recipes, spooky creations and ideas for Halloween.

Spooky drinks

Starbucks Phantom Frappuccino

The Phantom Frappuccino is available for Starbucks fans across Europe and is a fully vegan Halloween extravaganza.

Crafted with coconut milk, coconut whipped cream, mango essence and ghoulish lime slime.

The black and green coloured drink will give a spooky look to your coffee shop trip.

You better be quick though, as this haunting drink is only available until Halloween!

Blood Orange Cointreau

For those Halloween parties, you can make cocktails using the new Cointreau Blood Orange.

One warming recipe you can use this for is Cointreau Blood Orange mulled cider.

You will need

  • 350 ml Cointreau
  • 180 ml Fresh Lime Juice
  • 900 ml Cider
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2 Whole Star Anises
  • 2 Whole Cloves
  • 2 Oranges (thinly sliced)
  • 1 Apple (thinly sliced)

1. In a large saucepan, bring cider, lime, fruit and spices to a boil.

2. Cover and remove from heat.

3. Add the Cointreau last and steep for at least 20 minutes.

4. Divide among individual mugs and serve hot.

5. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick and a slice of apple or orange.

Spooky sweet treats

If you’re not in the mood for baking yourself, Biscuiteers have released a haunting Halloween range of biscuits.

This includes the Day of the Dead tin – with intricately decorated sugar skull biscuits for £35.

The BOO! Collection of four biscuits which spell out the word Boo with bats, a web and a pumpkin and are accompanied by a ghost for £25.

And the Giant Skeleton Jolly Ginger, which is a giant ginger biscuit iced to show a frighteningly sweet skeleton for £14.95.

If you’d like to make your own sweet treats, You can have a go at DairyDairy’s Monster Mummies Chocolate Chip Shortbread.

For this you need

  • Butter 175g (6oz), softened
  • Caster sugar 75g (3oz)
  • Plain flour 175g (6oz)
  • Semolina 75g (3oz)
  • Green paste/gel food colouring
  • Milk or plain chocolate chips 50g (2oz)
  • White choco melts 160g pack
  • Candy eyes 20

1. Preheat oven to 200°C/180°fan/Gas 6 and line a baking tray with baking paper.

2. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Fold in flour and semolina and enough food colouring to make a bright green. Stir in chocolate chips.

3. Tip out mixture onto a floured surface and shape into a log about 4-5cm (2in) diameter. Wrap in baking paper and freeze for 10 minutes to firm up.

4. Unwrap shortbread, slice into 10 and place on a baking tray (they may crack a little but you can push them back together as you place them on the tray). Bake for 10-12 minutes until just firm then cool on a wire rack.

5. When cold, melt chocolate melts in a bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Use to affix eyes, then drizzle over to create ‘bandages’. Leave to set.
