A dairy-free option is a must for pancake day, as crepes make up most people’s diets this Tuesday. Whether savoury or sweet, the food can suit a range of tastes, including those who don’t enjoy milk. People with strict dietary needs can make batches of the food with specially curated recipes.

How to make dairy-free pancakes

Dairy-free dietary arrangements are usually for people intolerant or allergic to lactose.

But they can also provide an alternative taste for curious foodies.

The below dairy-free recipe is from BBC Good Food and unfortunately doesn’t cover vegans.

Ingredients

  • 125g plain flour
  • One egg
  • 300ml hemp or coconut milk
  • Sunflower or rice bran oil

Method

People should start by adding the flour to a mixing bowl and creating a well in the middle for the eggs.

Crack it inside and pour in a quarter of the milk before mixing with an electric or balloon whisk.

Once whisked into a paste, add the rest of the milk and keep mixing until lump-free.

Then leave the mixture to sit for 20 minutes and stir gently before cooking.

BBC Good Food suggests heating a pan with a dash of oil before pouring in the mix.

One pancake requires a small amount of batter, which the cook should spread around the pan.

People should aim for a thin covering spread around the base of the utensil.

Cook the pancake for a few minutes until golden brown on the bottom and then flip it over.

Stir the mixture in between use to keep it smooth.

Continue cooking the batter until fully used and stack with pieces of parchment in between to prevent sticking.

Finally, people can add their toppings of choice.
