In March, Costa followed in the footsteps of many food providers by temporarily closing all of its 2,300 UK stores.

This was in line with social distancing measures that were brought in by the UK government amid the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement made at the time, chief executive of Costa Jill McDonald said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank our store teams, who during a lot of uncertainty over the past few weeks have continued to provide a warm and welcoming environment, and great service to our loyal customers.”

However, branches started to open again in April as the retailer trialled reopening 75 branches.

This week, Costa has confirmed more stores have opened across the UK.

A post on Twitter said: “We have a further 181 stores reopening for takeaway today, taking us up to a total of 501 stores open.

“A massive thank you to all of our team members for their hard work and passion to get these stores reopen.”

Branches have reopened in cities including London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Birmingham.

The restaurants will be open for takeaway, drive-thru or delivery using Uber Eats.

New social distancing measures have been put into place to help keep customers and employees safe.

When Costa shops first started to reopen, customers were not allowed to bring reusable cups for hygiene reasons.

However, it has now announced these will be accepted again and coffee lovers will get a discount for using them.
