Costa reopens 500 branches for drive-thru and takeaway with new rules for customers

Costa Coffee has gradually been reopening branches across the UK. Today, it announced a further nine stores have been opened for drive-thru. New social distancing measures have been put in place that customers must follow when visiting.

Costa temporarily closed branches earlier this year as the UK government asked restaurants to close.

Since then, the coffee favourite has been updating safety measures so they can reopen with social distancing in place.

In April, 75 locations in the UK were opened to trial out the new rules.

Since then, coffee shops across the country have reopened and are offering drive-thru, takeaway or delivery via Uber Eats.

Today, Costa confirmed a further nine drive-thru locations are operating again, meaning there are now over 500 branches open.

The coffee chain shared a post on Twitter by motorway service operators Roadchef.

It said: “Nine more of our @CostaCoffee drive-thrus have now reopened, so you can grab a delicious, barista crafted coffee from the comfort of your car.

“All of our drive-thrus have social distancing and extra safety measures in place, for both team members and customers.”

Last week, the retailer opened another 181 stores with new social distancing depending on how customers are getting their order.

Drive-thru orders

New extendable shelves that will minimise contact between customers and staff have been introduced.

The Costa website said: “Our Drive-Thru lanes are open as usual. To support with social distancing, you’ll notice we’ve installed a new extendable shelf, that enables our baristas to pass you your order with minimal to no contact.

“Our Drive-Thru stores currently remain shut for takeaway and eat-in customers. Keep an eye on our website and social pages for updates as to when they re-open.”

Takeaway orders

When entering a store offering takeaway beverages, customers need to follow new safety rules.

These include keeping a safe distance and waiting until they are asked to approach the counter.

The website added: “You’ll need to look out for and follow these floor signs, both inside and outside of the store to ensure social distancing.

“You’ll be called up to the counter to order one customer at a time and our team will greet you from behind a newly installed Perspex screen. Your order can be collected from the counter.”
