The Great British Bake Off is back, and never has the nation needed a collective TV hug more than it does now.

But while we love the Hollywood handshake worthy bakes the contestants create (think a Moulin Rouge windmill cake that actually turned), the average home cook might need to start with something a little more simple.

Thankfully, you can still whip up a showstopper without spending a fortune on lots of different ingredients.

Here, professional bakers share their favourite recipes that still have the wow-factor, but use just six ingredients.

Cassava Cake

Chef Zaw Mahesh, from Burmese restaurant Lahpet West End, London, shares this recipe for a straightforward but unusual bake. 


  • 500g grated cassava
  • 200ml coconut milk
  • 175g caster sugar
  • 50g Ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 egg
