Easter eggs are a popular tradition around the world and with so many on the market, it can be hard to know which ones are worth buying. The expert panel at BBC Good Food blind-tasted over 65 products to find everything from the best hot cross buns to the tastiest Easter Eggs.

Amongst the chocolate egg categories was the best milk chocolate egg, the best dark chocolate egg, the best white chocolate egg, the best vegan egg, best miniature egg and the best children’s egg.

It was Aldi’s showstopper who took the judges by surprise with its Specially Selected exquisite blond beehive egg & hidden truffles.

The discount retailer took top place in the BBC Good Food’s best white chocolate egg category.

Anna Lawson, Food and Drink writer at BBC Good Food praised the tasty Easter Egg explaining it “really wowed” the judges with its “many different flavours and textures”.

Available in-stores now for £14.99, the Easter Egg boasts chunky honeycomb pieces and bee pollen.

This is a huge £55 cheaper than last year’s Good Housekeeping Institute winner from The Chocolate Libertine.

The description reads: “This giant egg is decorated with milk chocolate honey caramel filled bees, finished with a gold lustre and standing above a hidden drawer of 12 milk chocolate and salted caramel truffles.”

Aldi also won the best children’s egg category with its Dairyfine strawberries & cream milkshake egg.

The novelty eggs are £6.99 and are available to purchase in-store right now.

Aldi also has a huge range of other Easter chocolate which is available nationwide.

Best milk chocolate egg saw Waitrose’s No.1 Hidden Truffles nutty milk chocolate Easter Egg with salted caramel truffles crowned.

The £10 egg is studded with crunchy almonds and a hint of fleur de sel with salted caramel truffles.

The upmarket supermarket also won the best dark chocolate egg with its No.1 Hidden Truffles dark chocolate Easter Egg with dark chocolate truffles.

The judging panel loved the chocolate egg noting that although it is 65 percent dark, it was mellow and sweet with fruity notes

BBC Good Food judges also rated traditional hot cross buns from the supermarkets.

Sainsbury’s has proved to be the number one destination for those looking for a classic hot cross bun this year with its Taste the Difference fruity hot cross buns.

Judges loved the super-soft texture with the bun packed full of plump and juicy fruit.

They can be brought online and in-store for £1.25 for a pack of four.

While the traditional hot cross bun may be a favourite for many, supermarkets have started to sell flavoured ones too.

M&S took the top spot in the flavoured category with its extremely chocolatey hot cross buns costing £1.65.

The judges loved the dramatic look and indulgent, brownie-like flavour.

The description of the buns on the M&S website reads: “Four extremely chocolate hot cross buns enriched with dark, milk and white chocolate pieces and cocoa powder.”
