You've been washing your mugs all wrong – and one thing will get rid of coffee and tea stains for good

01/16/2022

IF YOU have a favourite mug you regularly drink out of, it’s bound to be covered with harsh tea or coffee stains that won’t seem to budge.

That might be because you’ve constantly got a brew on the go and often just rinse out your mug rather than giving it a good scrub.

But regardless of how you’re washing your mugs, it turns out that you’ve been doing it wrong.

Brown stains aren’t a good look so here's how to get rid of them, for good.

Express.co.uk chatted to Dri-Pak to find out how to remove tea and coffee stains from mugs, so listen up.

Tannins, or tannic acid, are what give tea and coffee their brown colour, but they're also used as an agent for dyes.

While tannins are pretty harmless to your body, they are what stains your teeth AND your mugs.

Black, green and herbal teas are the main culprits and can cause your teeth to turn yellow or discoloured if you drink them too often.

The same also applies for coffee.

If you’ve noticed that brown stains have built up in your favourite mug over time, the experts at Dri Pak said: “Ditch the scouring pad because it won’t tackle the stain – it will be too fiddly and time-consuming and won’t make a huge difference.”

According to the experts, there is one magic product that will do the job here.

The experts said: “You only need one cheap and cheerful product to do the job: soda crystals.”

Soda crystals are white odourless crystals made up of hydrated sodium carbonate.

When dissolved in water, these crystals form an alkaline solution that is perfect for removing stains and grease.

You can buy soda crystals for as cheap as 80p from Ocado, so you don't need to worry about forking out for pricey cleaning products here.

So if your favourite mug needs a bit of TLC, all you need to do is fill it up with hot water and some soda crystals.

Leave the solution to soak for at least half an hour (preferably overnight) and then wipe the stains with a dishcloth or brush.

If your mug has been seriously harmed by your love of hot beverages and this doesn’t remove all of the stains, do it again and your stains should disappear!
