THERE'S nothing worse than going to run a brush through your hair – only to realise it's already covered in hair.

Dirty hairbrushes not only look unappealing – they can also carry dust mites, dead skin cells and oils if not cleaned regularly .

One TikTok user's viral cleaning hack shows how to effectively fight the build up of hair, germs and other nasties on your hairbrush.

The hack recommends allowing your brush to soak in a mixture of warm water and shampoo for an hour.

Next, you should use a toothpick to pick hair away from the brush.

Finally, rinse the brush in water and leave it to dry.

The brush is left looking brand spanking new and is free from hair and germs. Though clumps of hair can be removed from a brush simply by pulling, this does not remove the build up of things we can't see on and between the bristles, like oil and dead skin.

As we reported previously, experts recommend cleaning your hairbrushes frequently – otherwise bacteria and yeast overgrowth might start growing.

Dermatological surgeon Sejal Shah, M.D told Good Housekeeping:  "Like all your beauty tools, hairbrushes get dirty with repeated use, especially if you're using styling products on your hair."

Continuing to use a dirty brush means you're redistributing grease, skin and dirt buildup back across your hair and scalp every time you use it.

Soaking and cleaning with a gentle product like shampoo is an effective way to remove buildup without damaging the brush.
