A TEENAGER stunned her classmates with her choice of prom dress after accidentally picking out her mothers two-decade-old wedding dress from the wardrobe.

Thrifty Grace Jeyes, 18, from Melton Mowbray, Leicester, passed on getting an expensive new dress for her school prom and instead went in the wedding dress made in 1998.

The cream gown features a sweetheart neckline and netting details, as well as ruffled white sleeves and pearl buttons, and unlike the average of £390 spent by students on the big night, according to Bark.com, it was totally free.

Grace explained: "I didn't see the point in buying a new dress that I will only ever wear once, so I had a look in my wardrobe before looking in my mum's."

It was there she found the white wedding dress, surprising mum Dawn by putting it on and asking if she could borrow it for the special do.

"I found her stunning wedding dress and I fell in love with it," the teen said. "It fitted perfectly and I knew this was the one.

"My mum didn't even know until the eve of the prom and when she saw me in it, she was so happy. The dress means so much to her which made it even more special for me.

"Friends and teachers were all complimenting me on my dress as it was different from the rest, but nobody believed that it was once a wedding dress."

To modernise her 'vintage' look, Grace accessorised with red high heels, a red clutch and red lipstick.

Mum Dawn, who is a business owner, said: "Grace told me she already had a prom dress and didn't wan to shop for another one.

"I assumed it was going to be one of her many dresses in her wardrobe, so when she came down in my wedding dress, I was so shocked and extremely flattered.

"She always likes my wedding dress but I didn't think she would wear it. I felt like I must have decent dress sense for her to wear it outside.

"I am biased but I thought she looked the best. She looked unique and her dad David had the biggest smiles on his face and was amazed by how good she looked.

"Grace is very wise with money and thinks before she spends – so rather than buying a new prom dress we put the money towards driving lessons instead."
