A SAVVY shopper has revealed what the green symbols on packing really stand for – and it's not what you thought.

Product packaging always comes with what feels like dozens of symbols and dots, most of which we believe we know the meaning of.

Amongst the most popular and widely recognised are the green arrows going in a circle – the ones that tell you the packaging, whether it's made from plastic or cardboard, can be recycled and used again.

Right? No.

According to one green lifestyle enthusiast, Positively Green (@positivelygreenliving), these dots mean something else – and you might be surprised.

The whizz took it to TikTok to explain the true meaning behind this symbol in a video, enlightening fellow shoppers.

''The Green Dot means the producer of the product has made a financial contribution to general recycling in Europe.

''The Mobius Loop means it might be recyclable… depending where you live.''

As the world battles an ever-growing plastic crisis, with crabs dying inside plastic rubbish and squirrels puffing leftover vape pens, it's crucial we all take our part in recycling.

So what symbols should you look out for instead?

Across the UK, the guru claimed, the most accepted types of plastic are Number 1 (PETE) and Number 2 (HPDE).

However, there are also a few other numbers you might spot on the packaging – 3 (V), 4 (LDPE), 5 (PP), 6 (PS) and 7 (OTHER).

If the product packaging contains any of these, Positively Green urged people to head to recyclenow.com to check where the nearest recycling drop-off is located.

''The best place to find out what to recycle at home will be your local council website,'' the whizz added.

The clip has gone viral on social media, racking up close to a whopping 230,000 views and has seen countless of other recommendations.

One person commended: ''Have you heard of the app called horizon. You can scan products and it tells you if they are recyclable in your local area.''
