People are just finding out what HMV stands for… and they can't believe it's taken them so long to realise

MANY people bought their first CD from HMV… or in some cases their first tape.

The media mega-store was a staple on our high streets for years stocking every CD and DVD imaginable, as well as some cool posters for your room.

While the shop's shelves of music and black interiors are familiar, the most recognisable thing about the brand is its logo.

Everyone is aware of the bright pink lettering displaying HMV with an illustration of a sweet terrier sitting facing a grammar phone.

But do you know what the letters HMV stand for? If the answer is no, then you're not alone.

The letters HMV actually stand for "His Master's Voice".

The company originally sold gramophones and in 1899 they bought the copyright to a painting by Francis Barraud.

The picture hows a pup called Nipper listening to his late master's voice coming from a gramophone.

It was adopted as the company's logo and the name was abbreviated to HMV.

Taking to Twitter, one person said: "I am embarrassed to say it has just dawned on me that HMV stands for His Master's Voice."
