A NEW mum has opened up about giving birth to her one-in-a-million twins.

Chantelle Broughton and her partner Ashton welcomed adorable baby son Ayon and daughter Azirah on April 30 – but were surprised to discover that their newborns had totally different skin tones.

The four-month-old babies make up an uncommon set of twins, as Ayon was born with fair skin and green eyes, while Azirah took after her father with brown eyes and a darker complexion.

During an appearance on ITV’s breakfast show Good Morning Britain, Chantelle recalled meeting her children for the first time and the initial shock.

She told hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard: “At first it wasn’t that noticeable. They were quite similar in complexion, you could just see that she was slightly darker.

“But as the weeks and months have gone on, she’s just got darker and darker and he’s just got lighter.”

Continuing to give more detail about the rare situation, the doting mum explained: “We were just surprised, you see it but you don’t see it with twins so often.

“[But] we’re happy. We like that they’re a bit different and that one has taken after dad and one has taken after me.”

Chantelle also lifted the lid on other people’s reactions to the twins. She said: “Everybody’s shocked really. People will stop you anyway when they see you’ve got a double pram, as everyone seems to love twins.

“When they notice, they say, ‘Are they twins?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ And they say, ‘Oh wow, one’s dark, one’s light. That’s so unusual, I’ve never seen that before.’”

However, since welcoming her babies, Chantelle has also sadly been the target of cruel Twitter trolls.

Some have rudely asked if both are the couple's children – or even wrongly accused her of cheating on her partner.

One person on Twitter said: “Are they both his?”

While another added: “Or she was cheating on her fella…”

Yet the majority of comments were all about how gorgeous the little ones are – especially after they stole the show on GMB.

One person said: “Oh just beautiful.”

As another commented: “Major broodiness here, they are so adorable.”

Meanwhile, the ITV show’s Dr. Amir Khan appeared on the sofa next to Chantelle to lift the lid on how the extremely uncommon scenario came about.

It’s completely by chance and incredibly rare

He told viewers: “What will have happened is there will have been two eggs and two sperm fertilising those eggs.

“Skin colour is made up of about 20 different genes or so, and it’s a random assortment – what’s going to be found in one sperm won’t be the same as the other sperm, and the same with the eggs.

“That’s what will happen. A different set of genes will have fertilised one egg, and another on the other side. One will have favoured lighter skin, one will have favoured lighter skin.”

Dr. Amir concluded: “It’s completely by chance and incredibly rare – about one in five interracial couples who give birth to twins will give birth to twins like this.”
