SOME names have been tarnished with time, dark history and awful events which means they have plummeted in popularity.

But which names are completely blacklisted, and why?

These mums are sharing names they would never ever even consider and the thread has nearly 100 posts.

Taking to Mumsnet, these mums could not stop nattering on about taboo names, what would you add to the list?

Lolita

The name Lolita is mostly associated with the character in the book by Vladimir Nabokov, about a paedophile who goes for a young girl.

The character Lolita 12-year-old Dolores Haze is his victim.

Enola

The name Enola became prominent when the pilot of the plane that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima named the plane after his mother, Enola Gay.

Enola Holmes is also a popular Netflix series about the younger sister of fictious detective Sherlock Holmes.

Adolf

This name is massively unpopular due to the historic figure Adolf Hitler, who lead the Nazi part during WWII and was responsible for millions of deaths.

Despite being extremely rare, in 2016, seven baby boys were named Adolph.

Myra

Historically speaking, most people associate the name with Myra Hindley, the notorious serial killer.

One poster mentioned that: "Fred and Rose too then? I definitely see the point in this thread but is it only for unusually named awful people, because otherwise there are lots of Freds and Roses to dilute the connection?"

Another commenter explained that they don't link the name with the killer as it's acommon name and she will be forgotten as time passes.

Others agreed that the serial killer had not ruined the name, saying: "I think Myra is a nice name and I wouldn't necessarily not use it because of one woman years ago."

The name Myra is more common than many realise as it is regularly chosen for 75-100 baby girls a year.

In 2020 the name Myra was more popular than Katherine and Celeste.

Isis

The name meaning 'throne' could be unpopular as it shares a name with the terrorist group, called Islamic State.

Enoch

The name Enoch has lost popularity as it has become connected to Enoch Powell, a politician who made a notoriously racist speech in 1968.

Candida

Candida, also known as Candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by a yeast. 

The Candida infection normally lives on the skin and inside the body, on the mouth, throat, and gut, without causing major problems. 

Candida can cause further infections if it grows out of control or if it gets deep into the body.

Fanny

This old name was decided as unpopular because it has become a common euphemism.

Despite this, it has appeared in many classic children's books, such as The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton.

Peony

Commenters explained that this floral name sounds like something else when you say it aloud, for example: "Peony's hat, Peony's coat, Peony's rash, Peony's problem, Peony's caught on the zipper. Just say them out loud."

This poster disregarded the funny name-calling and decided they liked the flowery name, because it fits the current trend of unusual flower names and nature names.

Peony has also been ranked in England and Wales for the past ten years, so perhaps it is not a forbidden name.

Alexa

This once very popular name has tanked in the rankings because of the association with the Amazon home robot.

A family on the forum were wondering if they'd made a mistake and should rename their baby, due to the robot mix-up but many rushed to reassure them it was a good name.

Percy

Many seemed to think the name Percy had had its time, saying: "Pointing Percy at the porcelain is a well known expression for going to the toilet."

Percy Pig is also a massively successful M&S sweet, mascot and seasonal figure with easter eggs, halloween sweets, Christmas sweets, friend characters and even his very own Tiktok account.

Melaena/Melena

This name is no longer popular because it means the passage of black, tarry stools due to bleeding in the gut.

Daphne

A name found in Greek mythology that has lost popularity due to its origin story when Apollo tried to rape her and she got transformed into a tree.

Io

In a classic Greek myth Io was raped by Zeus and escaped from him by changing herself into a cow.

However, Io is also the largest of Jupiter's moons.

Phaedra

In Greek mythology Phaedra could not get her stepson to sleep with her so she accused him of rape and killed herself.

Margarita

One mum simply couldn't name their child Margarita as they associated the name with tasty pizzas and tequila based cocktails.

Addison

Addison's disease is also called adrenal insufficiency, and it is an uncommon disorder where the body doesn't produce enough hormones.

Parents were adament they still didnt like it however, saying: "[It] still creates an association with the name itself though, so I wouldn’t use it."

There is however, a major Tiktok star called Addison Rae who has nearly 90 million followers on the platform.

Lavinia/Lavigna

Lavinia gets plenty of toilet jokes connected to "lavatory" and also because of the horrific fate of Lavinia in Titus Andronicus.

Joby

The name Joby is often used in Scotland to mean 'p**', so is extremely rare in the north of the UK.

Amelia

Amelia is an old medical term which means without arms or legs.

The name also sounds like friend or "ami", and honey or "miel".

Electra

Electra is a mythological figure who had a psychological complex named after her.

According to Freud, the Electra complex is where little girls want to sleep with their fathers.

However, it is no longer accepted by most psychologists.




These are the old fashioned baby names set to make a comeback and it looks like Peaky Blinders is part of the reason why.
