Mum slams mother-in-law for ‘dangerously’ leaving daughter, four, alone to peel potatoes – but is she overreacting? – The Sun

A MUM has blasted her mother-in-law for "dangerously" leaving her four-year-old daughter to peel potatoes on her own.

Posting a furious rant on Mumsnet, the anonymous parent explained how she went to pick her daughter up from her mother-in-law's house after she'd slept over.

She wrote: "Went inside and they said [my daughter] hasn't had dinner yet and they were cooking egg and chips."

It was after this that the woman's sister-in-law informed her that her daughter had "peeled the potatoes all by herself with a potato peeler."

Not too concerned about this at first, the woman asked her daughter: "Are they just having you here to do all the jobs they don't want to do"

However her mother-in-law then informed her that her four-year-old had "peeled all the potatoes, carrots and parsnips" while she cleaned the house during their last visit.

I don't know what to think but I wouldn't personally leave somebody's child or my own unattended peeling my veg…

The mother continued: "Am I being unreasonable to be narked that my daughter is 4 and a potato peeler is dangerous especially unattended or am I being silly and it's just her growing up?

"I don't know what to think but I wouldn't personally leave somebody's child or my own unattended peeling my veg."

Needless to say, the dilemma sparked furious debate in the comments – with many arguing that her mother-in-law was right to teach her daughter the skill.

One wrote: "I think it's fine. My kids used the peeler at that age and I wasn't always in the room.

"kids often love to help in the kitchen, especially when they have proper responsibility. Makes them want to rise to the challenge."

"Worst case, she nicks herself," another argued. "Best case, she's learned a handy new skill."

"Much better than your mother-in-law sticking her in front of the TV," a third replied.

Meanwhile, another wellwisher wrote: "I think we always worry about our children but the only way for them to learn is for them to try it.

"Your worry is understandable but they do love to help and as others have said your four-year-old has learnt a new skill."

In more parenting news, this dad told his 14-stone daughter she needs to lose weight if she wants a man – and people are divided.

And this mum has decided to love her kids LESS because looking after them makes her "bleak and sad".

Plus this mum hides her chocolate stash inside the frozen vegetables in her freezer – and her kids have no idea.
