Laura Hamilton reveals how she's embraced her curves and big boobs after years of dieting

09/07/2020

SHE'S one of the most recognisable faces on UK daytime TV thanks to her ultra-glamorous role as host of A Place in the Sun.

But while Laura Hamilton, 38, is now a style inspiration for millions online, she's battled her own body confidence demons in the past.

The TV host suffered with shoulder ache for years thanks to her 28FF bust and previously admitting she was teased over her bigger boobs – pushing her to briefly consider a breast reduction.

However she now tells Sun Online she'll never go under the knife if she can help it, due to a rare scarring condition.

And Laura – who recently returned from Greece after weeks away filming with her insurance broker husband Alex and their kids Rocco, six, and Tahlia, five – says she's learned to embrace her natural curves after taking her quest to lose weight "too far" following the birth of her kids.

Here she tells Sun Online how she's happier than ever with her stunning figure, and how lockdown has brought her family closer together…

'I got a bit obsessive with my weight'

Laura admits, following the birth of her kids, she took her quest to slim down too far, sparking fears from her loved ones for her health.

The star, who is 5ft 3in, saw her weight plummet to 7st 2lb at its lowest but she wasn't immediately aware of how "obsessive" she'd become with it.

“I think I did [take it too far]," she admits. "And the problem was, if people said, ‘oh you’ve lost weight’, it would spur me on to say, ‘oh cool, oh have I, I’m going to lose a bit more’.

"I got a bit obsessive, I’d be wanting to weigh myself every morning. And then I just thought, this is ridiculous."

Laura says she ended up "losing her bum" and her "boobs and curves".

“People did start saying to me, ‘you’ve gone too far, you look a bit ill’," she adds.

“I don’t even weigh myself now, I don’t know what I weigh and I don’t want to after I’ve come back from Greece! I think, as a parent or as anyone on social media, you’re a role model."

She is now embracing her stunning curves and sticks to a healthier lifestyle, hosting regular workout sessions on Instagram and eating healthy fruit and veg.

'I wouldn’t want to be taking a knife to my body'

Laura has struggled with her bigger bust in the past however – so much so she previously considered having surgery to reduce the size.

“When I was younger I had quite big boobs and they used to hurt my shoulders, so I always thought [a breast reduction] would be something I’d consider after having kids," she says.

“I actually went to see somebody about it, and they talked me out of it. I’m really glad I didn’t do it.

“They told me how they did it and I thought, it sounds gross! I wouldn’t consider it now."

While her boobs did reduce in size when she lost weight, Laura has another reason to avoid going under the knife.

“I don’t heal in a very good way," she explains. "When I took a chunk out of my leg on Dancing On Ice, I got a scar on my left knee and it was quite lumpy for about two years.

“Then when I had Rocco I had to have an emergency c-section, and the scar was a bit lumpy again – a bit like the one I had on my knee.

“Then again when I had the same scar from the c-section with Tahlia, I was thinking, ‘am I going to heal?’

After 5 weeks of working abroad and travelling with my family, it is time to go home… . . . There have been lots of ups and downs, and whilst 2020 has been a crappy year for everyone, we have to stay positive for our little ones. They are the future. . . . I tell my children everyday how lucky we are to have each other… I tell them they must be kind, polite, treat others how they expect to be treated, be grateful and happy. It is the only way… . . . #blessed #happy #love #family #positivity #smile #grateful #summer #travel #travelsafe

“I spoke to [doctors] about it and they told me I’d got hypertrophic scarring. It’s if you have a major scar or wound, it’s a build of tissue around the scar, and it takes about two years for it to go completely flat.

“My c-section scar is a pencil line now, you can’t see it, but it took a while. For that reason I wouldn’t want to be taking a knife to my body.”

'I think embrace what you’ve got'

Laura says she now makes an effort to embrace her body and any imperfections on social media too, and purposefully posted a photo showing her cellulite previously to show how normal it is for women of all ages.

“I have got cellulite on my legs, and it’s there. It did disappear when I got really skinny, but I’ve got it," she says.

“I refuse to airbrush it out…. Of course, there’s certain ways you can sit to avoid it. But somebody commented [on that photo] saying, ‘bit young for cellulite aren’t you?’

"I thought, ‘actually, anyone can have it. I‘m 38!’ I just ignore those comments… I think embrace what you’ve got."

While most of the TV star's fans are hugely positive, she does get the odd cruel comment from a troll too – like anyone in the public eye.

And while she says she ignores more of them, one recently got her down when it targeted her family and their business.

The couple own a local restaurant and coffee shop called Lord Roberts On The Green, and they were offering lower prices and food deliveries at the height of lockdown.

She described on her Instagram Stories how they had been working flat out, but saw an extremely hurtful comment which left her suffering a panic attack.

"It affected me so badly that I couldn't breathe. I didn't actually know what was happening to me," she said on Instagram.

Laura revealed her husband ended up calling an ambulance as she felt like she was "drowning", before she was treated and told it had been a panic attack.

She now says it's comments that are directed at her family in particular that can prove very hard to ignore.

“I’ve read stuff previously like, ‘Tahlia, what a stupid name, why would you name your daughter that… you’ve picked a name that she’ll never be able to spell’. I'm thinking, why would you say that," she adds.

'I want people to see a different side to me'

Laura says she's particularly keen now to ensure she sends an important message to her fans on Instagram, such as with her post on cellulite.

However, she admits it can be difficult when she's abroad and posting from sunny locations to capture every aspect of real life.

“I’m never fully able to capture living life at a million miles an hour," she says.

“I’m running here, doing this, doing that, jumping up and down on the rubbish in the bins at the restaurant which I do because I get stuck in, but I don’t catch all of those things because I don’t have time."

She adds: "I want to put messages out there that are a bit thought-provoking for people, so they see a different side to me.”

Sadly Laura recently lost her grandfather while she was abroad, and she made the brave decision to share the news online at the time – once again keen to ensure her followers were aware of what she was going through behind closed doors.

She's now keen to continue a pledge she made to him before he died, after he gave some money to each of his grandchildren towards a passion of theirs.

For Laura, that was flying lessons – and she's already built up 16 hours in the air.

I was soooo looking forward to getting back behind the yoke this morning (that’s one of the controls for flying the plane!), after a few months off, but unfortunately The Great British Summer has put a stop to my flying lesson today… . . . Fingers crossed the weather is better next week and I can get back to it… #pilotintraining #ppl #adventure #lightaircraft #women #pilots

"In a way it’s sad that he didn’t get to see me really qualify, but he knew I was doing it," she says.

'It’s given us a different appreciation of each other'

Meanwhile, lockdown has meant Laura and her husband Alex, who she married in 2012, have spent more time together than ever, as he's been working from home and able to help out more with the kids.

It also meant he and the kids could join her in Greece during her recent filming stint – and she says the time has meant they have a "new appreciation" for each other and what they do.

"It’s helped Alex see and appreciate what I do. It’s very easy for anyone and everyone, including Alex, to think that he’s at home working and I’m away having a jolly," she says.

“Now he’s seen what I do, and the juggle of being with the kids, working, running the business remotely…

“And for me at the same time, it’s given me an appreciation of what he does. I didn’t know anything about his job and now I’ve seen him working from home and remotely.

"It’s given us a different appreciation of each other that we didn’t have before."

As for their secret to staying as happy as ever together, Laura says it's normally down to them having separate jobs and passions – giving them time apart so they're not under each other's feet all the time.

“I think being apart is equally as important as being together and being able to cope either way," she says.

“I know, for me, there’s no way I could be in a relationship and be in someone else’s pocket, that’s just not me. I need a bit of my own freedom.”

But, as with any couple, she says they "drive each other mad" now and again too.

"Alex always says, ‘oh Laura is always so busy’, then I’ll ask him a question and he’ll joke, ‘oh, you’re busy, I’m busy, just email me!’" she says.

“Of course we drive each other mad. I can’t sit still, even when I should be sitting down relaxing, I’ll be picking up a paint brush and wanting to redecorate my whole house – which I did in lockdown.

“Alex will raise his eyebrows and go, ‘oh God, what does she want to do now, what big scheme has she got next’. But he lets me be me, and I let him be him. You can’t try to change people, you are what you are."

While Laura says she's now looking forward to her next stint of filming for A Place in the Sun, she wouldn't rule out appearing in another reality show in the future – having previously starred in Dancing On Ice and The Jump.

But as for being a style inspiration now on Instagram, she appears gobsmacked and jokes: "I just wear what I wear."
