I'm a skin expert – six huge myths about anti-aging and a tip that will actually wipe the years off | The Sun

A SKIN expert has revealed the truth about anti-aging, and how the six myths about anti-aging are actually false.

Cosmetic dermatologist, Sam Bunting, broke down anti-aging myths about how aging truly works in a Youtube video.

Bunting first defined what anti-aging means and how that term can be quite triggering for some people.

"For some, this is a very triggering term, but I would say that it's not even an accurate one because the changes that we are referring to are actually usually have very little to do with the process of aging," Bunting said.

Although it's not a myth, Bunting revealed that the physical changes people experience in aging don't have much to do with the actual process of aging, instead, it's mostly about the sun exposure one gets.

Bunting said: "Most of what we perceive as aging is actually due to premature sun damage. It's just that that is much more of a mouthful to say.

"In fact, because we inspect the innermost part of our arm, an area that is exposed to very little UV rays over a lifetime, we will see what true aging actually looks like.

"And actually, it's quite a graceful thing. The skin is pretty smooth. It's a little thinner.

"It might be a little bit less snappy, but at the end of the day, it's a very different animal to the front of the arm for many people were incidental.

"UVA exposure causes the changes that we associate with anti-aging convention."

The first myth about anti-aging is the belief that aging is determined by a person's genes.

Bunting said that is wrong because the appearance of the skin is actually heavily influenced by the sun.

"The appearance of aging our skin is…one that we can influence because as much as 80 percent of the changes we associate with aging are preventable because they're largely caused by UV exposure," she explained.

The second myth Bunting debunked is the belief that aging is just about wrinkles.

Bunting said: "This is borne out by the number of women who come to see me who have Botox and fillers, but they're still not happy with how they look.

"They're right because the brain knows that even if something is stretched out and smooth, the texture isn't improved. If the skin tone isn't even and bright, the skin isn't healthy and hydrated."

The third myth is about anti-aging products working immediately, but Bunting said that it's an immediate red flag if a product claims that.

"The only thing you can influence in an immediate sense is the hydration state of the skin. And this is all, a temporary thing," Bunting said.

The fourth myth is that moisturizers can prevent aging.

"Moisturizer has a temporary effect on your skin only in the truest sense of the word moisturizer. It will temporarily increase the amount of water in your skin barrier which is great.

"But know that moisturizers alone will not address those critical changes that we talked about sagging, thinning, uneven skin tone." Bunting revealed.

The fifth myth is believing that DIY products are effective for anti-aging.

"Nothing in your kitchen is going to have the same impact on your skin as skincare formulated intentionally with ingredients that are designed…to target specific destinations in your skin effecting change…"

The last myth Bunting debunked is the belief that luxury brands are better.

Bunting revealed that the marketing of some luxury brands continues to have success in drawing in more consumers, but she hopes that people will make informed investments after watching her.

"I hope that with a platform like mine, you're learning the importance of understanding what's in a product, how much of that ingredient is in a product, what combination of ingredients are in there," she said.
