08/25/2023A FASHIONISTA has revealed that she regularly wears her grandad’s old clothes out and about.
And she said it’s easy to follow in her fashion footsteps, as all you have to do is make a few tweaks and they transform into stylish statement pieces.
Issy, who says she loves “sewing, crochet and general making”, explained she takes items such as her grandad’s old button-up shirts and upcycles them.
The social media user, who can be found on TikTok at @handmade.byissy, then shared her step-by-step guide on how to turn it into a wardrobe staple that others would envy.
First, Issy modelled the shirt in its original form – an old, checked number that was both too big and slightly too long for her.
But she didn’t send it to the charity shop. Instead, Issy spotted its potential and set to work on making it into a “cute blouse”.

The first part of the process was to remove the collar and buttons.
She did so by cutting the collar off with fabric scissors and then turning her attention to the buttons.
Next, she placed it against her body and cut it to her desired length – again chopping off the excess material and putting it to one side to be used later on.
Issy then used her sewing machine skills to hem the neckline and edges, ensuring it was done to perfection.

The second part of the process was to jazz the shirt up – and there’s where the excess material from the bottom of the shirt came in.
First, she showed how to create two thin straps, which she then told people to “sew and turn inside out and then iron.”
Once this part of the method was finished, Issy used the rest of the material to create one large rectangle, which was two pieces sewn together in a scarf-like item.
Then her design skills really set in. She once again hemmed it, before creating a pretty gathering detail along the length of the material using her sewing machine, and then feeding it through with her hands.
Once the ruffles were ready, she sewed them onto the bottom of the shirt to create a small peplum finish.
And now the shirt was without its buttons, she created a simple tie at the top so she could wear it open with a white vest underneath.
Issy’s social media followers were blown away by the before and after transformation and complimented her on her design.
The video posted to her profile received a whopping 421k likes, and thousands of comments.
