I left my boring job as a dental hygienist & doubled my income in a year helping women leave their husbands | The Sun

SITTING at home one day, mum-of-two Carla Da Costa admitted to herself that she felt bored and "lost in herself".

The dental hygienist, from Perth, Australia, had temporarily given up work to be a full-time mum to her two daughters, but had the nagging feeling something was missing.

She was married and loved her husband but their relationship was “not in a good place”.

Carla, 49, has since split from her partner and now earns double what she did in the dental industry working as a life coach helping women through their own divorces.

Speaking to Fabulous about the lead-up to the split, she explained: “I loved my daughters and wanted that time with them but I also started to feel really bored and lost in myself, unconfident and increasingly nervous about having to return to the dental industry after so many years out of the industry. 

“I wasn’t happy in myself and neither was my then husband happy in himself due to work pressures and our marriage was not in a good place.”

Carla – who is mum to Amelie, 11, and Jessie, 9 – decided to take up blogging and life coaching, and suddenly experienced a new lease of life.

She continued: “I started my life coaching course and graduated in 2016 because I wanted to do something positive for myself and for others.

“At the time I wanted to help women to feel confident and amazing in their skin again.

“I went through my own divorce in 2016/2017. My marriage didn’t survive me feeling happier and more confident in my skin.

“It wasn’t able to grow and expand to accommodate this new version of myself.

“I loved my husband but I fell out of love with him. 

“I decided I couldn’t live the rest of my life (I was 35) feeling like I was married more to a friend than a lover or committed partner in life. 

“Outwardly we had everything. The nice house. Beautiful family. Good lifestyle. 

“But as a couple we were lacking the things I needed for this to be a relationship that truly made me happy as a woman.”

The last two years have caused many couples to evaluate their relationships and what they value in them. 

After her marriage crumbled, Carla realised there was a niche in the market for helping women unhappy in their marriages and wanting a divorce. 

The mum-of-two briefly returned to work as a dental hygienist to pay for the divorce, but decided to work full time with her life coaching in 2021.

She now earns double what she did in the dental industry and finds her daily life “fulfilling”.

Carla said: “I changed all of my marketing and became a divorce coach to specifically help women live their best lives after divorce. 

“Absolutely my own personal journey forms the foundation of my business and knowledge coupled with working with 100's of women who have gone through the exact same journey.

“I have definitely noticed a real increase in demand for my services since the pandemic and the lockdowns that have come with that. 

“The last two years have placed enormous strain on many relationships that were already strained or emotionally disconnected.

“The last two years have caused many couples to evaluate their relationships and what they value in them. 

“Asking can I actually spend the rest of my life with this person happily and be fulfilled on a personal level? 

“Not just for the kids. Not just because he wants me to stay. 

“Not just for the money but for me. Can I stay for me? 

“And many men and women have had that 'waking up' moment and realised that they cannot.”

I never hear women say to me ‘I regret leaving’, I only hear women saying to me ‘I wish I'd left sooner.’

As part of her services, Carla offers online workshops, a group program, personalised 1:1 coaching and has even brought out her own book, Seconds Please. 

She added: “I try to offer varying services to help women whatever their budget.

“My work is incredibly fulfilling, helping these women to completely transform and own their full potential and gifts. 

“It's like helping them to take the blinkers off from over their eyes that have been on there since they were married.”

Speaking of advice she would give for women who are unhappy in their marriages, she said: “If you are no longer in love with your husband please know that the grass can be greener on the other side. 

“Staying in a marriage for reasons of fear over love isn't fair on you, your partner or your children. 

“I never hear women say to me ‘I regret leaving’, I only hear women saying to me ‘I wish I'd left sooner.’”
