A WOMAN who didn't want to waste the space under her stairs decided to turn it into a room just for her cats.

DIY fan Kristy took to Instagram to share a video detailing the process, as she began: "Last summer I decided to cut into my wall under the stairs to see if I could finish out the unused space and add some extra storage.

"My original plan was to create a room to put the litter boxes in for my four cats, and hopefully get my bathroom back."

Once she cut into the wall, she was "so surprised" by how much space there was under the stairs and "immediately got to work".

"I had to remove a stud and reframe that portion of the wall to add a support for a doorway," Kristy continued.

"Once that was done, I added an outlet to the back of the room because their litter boxes are automatic and need to be plugged in."

She had to fix an exposed wire, before adding framing to the bottom of the stairs to support the drywall.

"Then I drywalled the entire space which is probably one of my least favourite tasks," she sighed.

"Just the spackle alone on all the seams took multiple days to complete so it could dry in between.

"I skim coated over all of the drywall, and then spent way too long trying to recreate that same knockdown texture as the rest of the house because I really wanted this space to feel like it belonged and wasn’t added on."

Once that was dry, she used leftover paint to paint the room, before using clearance waterproof flooring and adding baseboards.

She added casing to the doorway, and fixed the drywall on the other side of the wall where she'd cut into it.

"This project took a little over a month but now my cats have their own separate space for their litter boxes and they are absolutely loving it," she concluded.

"I am still loving it and so are the cats!" Kristy added in the caption.
