CHILDREN aged 16 often take on a part time job to make some extra money.

Here's the rules on how many hours a 16-year-old can work in the UK.

According to gov.uk, there are several restrictions on employment for 16 year olds.

These rules vary between school term time and breaks in term.

During term time, children are only allowed to work 12 hours a week.

This includes a maximum of two hours on a school day, and eight hours on a Saturday.

During school holidays, 16 year olds can work a maximum of 35 hours per week.

It is illegal to employ a 16 year old without an employment permit issued by the education department of the local council, if this is required by local bylaws.

There are other restrictions as well, including not being allowed to work during school hours, before 7am or after 7pm or for more than one hour before school.

This is allowed on Saturdays during school term time, or on weekdays and Saturdays during the school holidays.

Children are only allowed to enter full-time work when they've reached the minimum school leaving age in the UK, which is 16.

You can leave school on the last Friday in June if you’ll be 16 by the end of the summer holidays.

You must then do one of the following until you’re 18:

  • stay in full-time education, for example at a college
  • start an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training

16 year olds are only permitted to work for two hours on a Sunday.

This is a rule in both term time and during the school holidays.
