GETTING to sleep during a heatwave can be tricky with hot, sticky nights leading to a restless kip.

While the last thing you want to in the scorching heat is make a hot water bottle, an expert has revealed it could be the key to a good night’s rest.

The body prepares for sleeping by cooling down our core temperature, which can be hard during summer.

If you don’t have any air conditioning, fans can make little impact on the overall temperature.

But expert James Wilson, AKA The Sleep Geek, revealed a way to trick your body into cooling down, ready for sleep.

He said raising your body’s temperature on purpose allows it to then cool down to room temperature, fooling your body into thinking it’s ready to get some shut eye.

James told the Mirror: “To do this you can either have a lukewarm shower or alternatively, and this is a particular favourite of mine, fill a hot water bottle with lukewarm water and place your feet on it about half an hour before bed.

"The lukewarm water raises our core temperature slightly and our body reacts to it by trying to shed the excess heart, which means we then get a drop in core temperature and voila.

"We have created the right conditions core temperature wise for us to get better sleep."

Tips to sleep during the heatwave

  • Keep bedroom curtains closed during the day
  • Use cotton sheets, which will absorb sweat and help you sleep more comfortably
  • Open a window an hour before you go to bed
  • Use a fan to circulate air around the room
  • Put sheets in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime

The tip comes as the UK baked in highs of 33c over the August Bank Holiday weekend – the hottest ever on record.

And the scorching weather shows no signs of stopping, with the mercury predicted to hit 32c later today.

But the warm weather will be accompanied by lashings of rain, with a yellow weather warning in place for most of the eastern parts of the UK, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms expected.

Meanwhile we revealed why the heatwave could be giving you nightmares.

Plus doctors warned women not to put ice lollies in their vaginas to cool down.
