Darren Kennedy: 'No, you haven't time-travelled to the '90s – chokers are back'

Chokers have been slowly creeping back into our lives over the past few seasons. Synonymous with the 1990s, chokers are in fact said to have been around for thousands of years, first gracing the world’s earliest civilisations in Ancient Egypt.

Chokers reached their peak in the 19th century around the time of the UK’s Queen Alexandra – wife of King Edward VII – who wore one to conceal a scar on her neck. Little did she realise she was setting a fashion trend.

This time round, they can be spotted on the necks of cool girls and off-duty models all over Instagram, with the fashion houses following suit.

At Christian Siriano, a thick choker was covered in shiny rhinestones. At Alexander McQueen, they are as punk as can be, while others were more romantic, with crystal-covered pendants or pearls hanging from them.

Of course, the choker trend wouldn’t be complete without some spiky additions, as seen on the runway at Gucci.

Dua Lipa attended the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Awards in London in this oversized menswear blazer and white trousers. The slouchy look works on her (in fairness she could wear anything). The dainty, light-yellow bralette nailed the suits-without-shirts trend which is ideal at this time of year as we start to transition our wardrobes towards autumn.

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution

Travel can really wreak havoc on the skin and, despite how much R&R you get on holidays (if you’re lucky), eyes can still bear the giveaway signs of long-haul flights or early starts. For this predicament, the caffeine solution from The Ordinary will be your best friend. With a high concentration of caffeine, it works to tackle under-eye tiredness and reduce puffiness as well as dark circles in the eye contour.

Top Tip

Chokers can perfectly complement an edgy ensemble but they also add interest to more traditional outfits. A choker worn over a collar rather than against the skin can make a simple white shirt really stand out.
