Christmas lights 2019: Switch on dates from London's Regent Street to Manchester and Edinburgh

BRITAIN is set to sparkle in the coming weeks as Christmas lights up and down the country are switched on to mark the start of the festive season.

But with so many celebrations taking place, here’s our guide on where to catch the best of the bunch.

London

Regent Street

  • Regent Street will dazzle on Thursday, November 14 this year.
  • It is said to be the largest light installation in the capital, with those golden angels suspected to make a comeback for the fourth year running.
  • The area will be traffic free from 5pm until 9pm with a number of celebrities in attendance.

Oxford Street

  • Oxford Street will be illuminated with stunning festive lights on Thursday, November 21.
  • The Oxford Street lights use around 750,000 LED bulbs 1,778 baubles for its snowfall theme

The Shard

  • The Shard's top twenty floors will also be dazzling some time in December.

Northern England

Manchester

  • Manchester's annual lights switch on usually takes place at the famous Albert Square, but this year the event has been move to Deansgate, while the Square's Town Hall continues being restored.
  • This is set to take place on Thursday, November 14.
  • The night will be topped off with a massive fireworks display.

Liverpool

  • Liverpool is throwing a huge street party on Friday, November 15 with the help of hit local radio station Liverpool ONE.
  • Performances from Liverpool International Music Festival's academy are set to take place, as the specially-built Polar Adventure train will be perfect for the little ones.
  • The party starts at 4pm with festive street performances, including storytelling, dancing, singing and lots of special effects.

Scotland

Edinburgh

  • Edinburgh will host an extravagant “Light Night” to kick off the festive season and send the city's lights sparking into life on Sunday, November 17.
  • The event will include seasonal hits from: Edinburgh’s Little Voices Big Stars, Rock Choir Live, the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh’s Community Choir, Intercultural Youth Scotland and Ama-zing Harmonies.

Glasgow

  • George Square known as Glasgow's festive hotspot throughout the festive season.
  • On Sunday, 17 November, the lights will come alive.
  • This is a ticketed event which will be allocated by public ballot. Successful applicants were told in mid-October if they had secured tickets.
