Born on Friday the 13th? Does it mean you are unlucky for life? The truth about the superstition

09/13/2019

STEP on a crack and break your mother's back. Avoid walking under ladders at all costs. And don't even get us started on black cats.

These are just three superstitions we are fed as gospel… but Friday the 13th? Now that one still spooks us out, here's everything you need to know about the unlucky date.

Why is Friday the 13th unlucky?

Turns out, Friday 13th isn't just a myth perpetuated by children in the playground.

This superstitious day actually dates all the way back to biblical times.

Specifically with the Last Supper which was attended by Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples… one of whom catastrophically betrayed him.

After all, 12 disciples + one leader = the unlucky number 13.

Seeing as Jesus was crucified on a FRIDAY no less, it's understandable why some people came to believe Friday 13th was haunted.

Does being born on Friday 13th make you unlucky for life?

Firstly, it depends on if you believe in superstitions.

Secondly, there is no definitive evidence which proves babies born on a Friday 13th are going to be unlucky for life

A 2015 research project into the employment status, salary and marital status of those born on the "unfortunate" day found little evidence to prove the theory.

But we'd still recommend chucking a handful of salt over your shoulder every so often all the same.

How many Friday 13ths are there in a year?

Unsurprisingly, the number of Friday 13ths that fall in a year depends on the calendar year.

Without fail, there will be at least one of the unlucky dates every 12 months.

However, superstitious souls will have to look out for years that start on a Thursday… these few common years will have THREE of the unfortunate dates in the months February, March and November.

Duly noted. We may just book that day off work.
