What’s on TV Saturday: Ramy Youssef and ‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’

RAMY YOUSSEF: FEELINGS (2019) 10 p.m. on HBO; stream on HBO platforms. Chances are you hadn’t heard of Ramy Youssef before his breakout comedy series “Ramy” landed on Hulu in April. Youssef, an Egyptian-American comedian, stars as a fictionalized version of himself, a young Muslim man in New Jersey who takes pride in his cultural and religious beliefs but struggles to balance them with partying and dating. (In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Youssef said he created “Ramy” to humanize a Muslim family, “which turned out to be a lot easier than humanizing New Jersey.”) On the heels of the show’s success — it has a 97 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has been picked up for a second season — Youssef is starring in his first HBO special, “Feelings.” In his signature mellow delivery, he shares his father’s immigration story, questions his love of LeBron James and contemplates the baggage that comes with having sex.

THE BOBBY DEBARGE STORY (2019) 8 p.m. on TV One. This new biopic puts a spotlight on Bobby DeBarge (Roshon Fegan), the former lead singer of the 1970s R&B group Switch and a member of the family musical group DeBarge. The movie delves into his highs and lows — celebrated as a falsetto master, he struggled offstage with drug addiction and spent five years in prison on drug trafficking charges. He died in 1995 at age 39 from AIDS-related complications.

THE SON 9 p.m. on AMC. The second and final season of this Western about a Texas ranching family comes to an end. The young Eli (Jacob Lofland) welcomes major changes in his life while the older Eli (Pierce Brosnan, who doesn’t have enough Texan genes), wages a final showdown with the Standard Oil company.

THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME (2018) Stream on Amazon or Hulu. The “spy” in this zany espionage comedy (Justin Theroux) pretty much sums up the plot early on: “Some bad people are after me, and now they’re after you.” He’s talking to Audrey (Mila Kunis), the girlfriend he dumped in a text exchange, who learns that he doesn’t actually work for NPR only after their breakup. He’s out of the picture pretty quickly and the targets become Audrey and her airhead best friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon). They get swept up in an international conspiracy that takes them all over Europe, and their bond gives this flick some much-needed oomph. “The two of them find a relaxed, nimble rhythm that keeps the movie going through so-so action sequences and less-than-fresh plot twists,” A.O. Scott wrote in his New York Times review. Action abounds, but this caper’s best asset is McKinnon.

THE SON OF JOSEPH (2017) Stream on Mubi; Rent on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu or YouTube. A Parisian teenager (Victor Ezenfis) raised by a single mother (Natacha Régnier) learns that his father is a self-centered, famous publisher in this absurd take on the Nativity directed by Eugène Green.
