Shakira hints at Gerard Pique split with 'faithful' remark at Billboard awards

Shakira might still be everyone’s favourite shade queen after appearing to address her split from former footballer Gerard Pique while accepting an award.

The Colombian popstar, 46, and the ex-Barcelona defender, 36, began their relationship in 2011 after meeting on the set of a music video in 2010.

In 2013, Shakira gave birth to the couple’s first child, Milan, with Sasha following two years later, just a week after Milan’s second birthday.

However, in June 2022, the superstar couple confirmed they had split months earlier, with Gerard having reportedly been dating Clara Chia Marti since 2021.

Shakira has made some not-so-subtle comments about her ex in recent months, including releasing a so-called diss track, and she now appears to have taken aim yet again while accepting the award for Billboard’s woman of the year 2023 at the first-ever Latin Music Gala in Miami.

When asked about relationships, she said: ‘It doesn’t matter so much if someone is faithful or not. What really matters is if you continue to be faithful to yourself.’

She added: ‘There comes a time in every woman’s life when she no longer depends on someone to love or accept herself as she is.

‘The search for the other is replaced by the search for oneself when the desire to be perfect is replaced by the desire to be authentic.’

The Whenever, Wherever hitmaker then sent a vital message to women around the world, saying: ‘Women are much stronger than we think.’

She then continued to proclaim: ‘We are braver than we think we are. I think we are also more independent than we were taught to be.’

Earlier this year, Shakira recorded a diss track about Gerard titled Out of Your League, which became one of the most-watched Latin videos on YouTube in its first 24 hours after release.

Shortly after unveiling the song, she then appeared to heavily criticise Clara Chia Marti, saying: ‘There is a place in hell reserved for women who don’t support other women.’

Gerard then responded to the diss track by turning up to an event in a Renault Twingo car, referencing a line from the song that accused him of ‘trading a Ferrari for a Twingo’.

Last month, Shakira moved to Miami with both of her children and asked for privacy, wanting her children to feel safe and happy when out in public.
