Mortal Kombat 12 leaks Peacemaker and Homelander – no Ash from Evil Dead

05/12/2023

Instead of Injustice 3, two prominent superhero characters are rumoured to be joining the Mortal Kombat roster as paid DLC.

A proper announcement is likely just around the corner, but a few details regarding the next Mortal Kombat game have apparently found their way online: the big one being that it’s another series reboot.

Instead of Mortal Kombat 12, it’s named Mortal Kombat 1 (because of course it is) and is launching for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and, surprisingly, the Nintendo Switch.

In another unlikely turn, fans may already know two of the planned DLC characters, rather than any of the core roster: DC’s Peacemaker and Homelander from the hit comic/TV show The Boys.

Their inclusion is admittedly not too surprising, given Mortal Kombat’s become a hotbed of cameos since the 2011 reboot, from horror icons like Freddy Krueger to action movie stars like Rambo.

You would think Peacemaker and Homelander would be saved for an Injustice sequel, considering they’re both from superhero properties, but given they come from more violent source material, they’re arguably more suited to Mortal Kombat. Homelander wouldn’t exactly be allowed to punch Batman’s head off in Injustice 3.

This is according to Windows Central, who seem pretty confident about Peacemaker but admit Homelander may not be guaranteed. At the very least, the first batch of DLC sounds like it’ll be comprised mostly, if not entirely, of guest characters from other franchises.

‘We’ve heard that the MK1 character pass will feature various properties owned by Warner Brothers, including Peacemaker from the DC Universe, and possibly even Homelander from comic book series The Boys, amongst others we have yet to confirm,’ they say.

The uncertainty around Homelander is likely because The Boys isn’t a Warner Bros. property and is produced by Amazon and Sony. So, his incorporation isn’t as simple as someone like Peacemaker, who’s a regular DC character.

Anyone hoping that maybe those rumours of Ash from the Evil Dead movies joining Mortal Kombat will bear fruit this time will want to abandon those hopes, however.

The rights to the character have always been complicated, but actor Bruce Campbell himself outright said he doesn’t want to see it happen and would rather Ash stick to Evil Dead games rather than cameo elsewhere.

‘I don’t want Ash to appear in other people’s games,’ he told The A.V. Club last month. ‘Other creatures like Freddy and Jason [Vorhees] should be in the Evil Dead game. You should be able to play as Freddy. You should be able to play as Jason and then have Ash fight those guys. … I’m not interested in loaning Ash out. They need to come to our house.’

It’s a bit strange to know of the guest characters before any actual Mortal Kombat fighters are confirmed. Popular mainstays like Scorpion and Sub-Zero are practically guaranteed to return, but Mortal Kombat 1’s reboot status means that won’t necessarily look or act they way they used to.

NetherRealm could even opt for a mostly new cast, with only a handful of veterans. Street Fighter 3 did the same thing in 1997, although that wasn’t appreciated by everyone.
