Mindy Kaling Weighs in on the Identity of Her Daughter Katherine's Father
06/12/2019Mindy Kaling’s candor is one of the many reasons we love her, and while the recent mom is comfortable with talking about what she feeds her 18-month-old daughter and what motherhood lessons she’s learned, don’t expect Mindy Kaling to reveal her daughter Katherine’s father. In an interview with The New York Times Magazine to promote her film Late Night, the topic of Katherine’s father came up. Kaling has never so much as hinted at who Katherine’s father is, so there have been a lot of rumors about the father’s identity, as Kaling has tried to focus the narrative on her life as a single mom.
“My feeling is that until I speak to my daughter about that, I’m not going to talk to anyone else about it,” Kaling told The New York Times Magazine. She continued later on, “I think people are often surprised that for someone who seems as open as I am on social media and who writes things that seem drawn from my life, I find that stuff [her relationship with Katherine] really private.”
What’s key in Kaling’s comments is the implicit gentle but firm request for people to stop speculating about who Katherine’s father is. Kaling’s choice to be a single mom and parent her daughter how she chooses is something the public needs to respect. Plus, Kaling has a point: Until the most important person in this situation, Katherine, knows who her father is, we have no right to speculate wildly and potentially affect Katherine’s life in a negative way.
With this in mind, Kaling was totally comfortable switching the topic to her life these days with Katherine. She told The New York Times Magazine what she enjoys most right now about being a mom, saying, “Right now I’m surprised at how much I enjoy being a mom… I did not think I had a big maternal instinct. I’m very impatient, and having a baby requires an amount of patience that I was worried about. But they don’t tell you that the thing will look so much like you, and do things that are so sweet and adorable, that you’ll naturally not have the same impatience that you would have with a stranger or someone who works for you.”
So, what can we take away from this interview? Ultimately, we may never know who Katherine’s father is and that’s OK. What’s more important is that eternally cool mom Kaling is devoted to her daughter and will always be ready to give us a look into their lives together.
