Meghan Markle Was 'Trained to Be Personable' — But Not by the Royal Family

Try as they might to criticize her, the media has been forced to admit that Meghan Markle excels at putting on a friendly face. Apparently, this suspiciously warm demeanor required further investigation — and, lo and behold, Express has uncovered that Meghan Markle was trained to be personable before Prince Harry came along. Meghan’s former boss from Humphrey Yogart, a Los Angeles frozen yogurt shop where Meghan worked in high school, spoke to Express about the training required for the job, and why the owner thinks it’s serving Meghan as a royal now.

The frozen yogurt job itself seems like a standard high school gig: 10-12 hours per week, after school and on weekends, and paid minimum wage. It presumably entailed interacting with customers, as owner Paula Sheftel explains that the shop trained its staff “to be personable and have great eye contact and be very genuine.” The demands of the job were reportedly intense: “A lot of kids can’t handle the pressure,” Meghan’s former boss advised.

Apparently, Meghan wasn’t one of those kids: Customers loved her, and her boss remembers her fondly. “It takes a special personality for someone that young to deal with [the job],” she recalls, “Meghan had that early on.” According to Sheftel, they didn’t just teach Meghan skills she needed to succeed at Humphrey Yogart, but ones that would serve her far beyond. “She had to prove she had an outgoing personality,” Sheftel says, adding that these are “skills she’s going to need traveling the world with Harry.”

It’s odd that Express found the need to provide an explanation for Meghan’s friendly demeanor — and even odder that they framed it as a “Meghan Markle shock.” If anything, this anecdote is exactly in line with what we should expect from Meghan: She was a hardworking teen with great social skills, and she’s now a hardworking Duchess with great social skills.
