Love Island viewing figures have once again plummeted, reaching just half of last year’s summer launch.

The reality dating programme has returned to our screens, with Maya Jama leading the way for her second season.

After the disaster that was the winter season, this year’s summer version has a lot to live up to – from Ekin-Su Culculoglu crawling on the floor to Andrew Le Page’s ‘licking a t*t or whatever’.

But, it seems viewers aren’t interested anymore.

Only an average 1,300,000 viewers tuned in to watch the programme on television, with a further 400,000 streaming on ITVX.

MailOnline notes that the total number is just more than half of the 2,400,000 viewers who on average tuned in for last year’s summer launch.

Meanwhile, in winter the first episode saw an average of only 1,400,000 viewers.

Last night’s episode saw numbers drop down as low as 1,000,000 at one point, meaning 500,000 switched off as Love Island figures reached their lowest.

ITV confirmed to Metro.co.uk that this summer’s launch episode had a combined peak across ITVX and television of 1,900,000 viewers, making it the highest rating programme in the slot across all channels (excluding BBC One).

Monday’s episode saw Molly Marsh, Tyrique Hyde, Ella Thomas, Mitchel Taylor, Ruchee Gurung, Mehdi Edno, Jess Harding, George Fensom, Catherine Agbaje and André Furtado all make their debuts on the show.

The episode gave us some pretty  head-scratching and frustrating moments, while a huge twist at the beginning saw both girls and boys enter the villa together for the first time, though it was once again down to the audience to couple up the pairs.

Tonight’s episode sees connections being strengthened, while bombshell Zachariah Noble gets to know the girls and figure out who he wants to couple up with, leaving one boy vulnerable.

Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
