Gross secret your hair straighteners are hiding – and what to do about it

If you're serious about beauty, you probably have a habit of cleaning your make-up brushes, after all, you don't want to be putting anything dirty on your face.

But what about your hair?

You might unclog your hair brush from time to time, but have you ever made sure your hair straighteners were in the best condition they can possibly be?

If the answer to that is no, then you might want to give it a go, because it turns out the styling product could be hiding a very dirty secret and causing damage to your hair.

Like other items around the home, hair straighteners can become covered in a lot of gross things, including dust and dirt.

The plates of the hair tool are exposed to many substances, including hairspray and other products you've put into your hair, as well as your hair's own oils, which are secreted from the scalp.

A build up of all these things could stop the straighteners from working properly and it's also very likely your hair is being coated in all of the dirt and bacteria.

But that doesn't mean you should rush home and throw away your beloved straightening tongs as there is something you can do to make it all better.

Jo Robertson, ghd's Head of UK and Republic of Ireland education revealed how you can give your straighteners a good clean and get rid of all the nasty things.

Speaking to Mail Online, she said: "Once you have finished styling, place the heat resistant plate guard on your styler and allow to cool on a heat resistant surface such as a heat mat.

"When the styler has cooled down, it should be stored without wrapping the cable around the styler as this will shorten the life of the product and damage the cable over time."

She added: "To clean your styler, use a lightly damp soft cloth or baby wipe on the plates but never submerse your styler in water."

The same technique can be applied to your hair brushes, if you want to make sure they are also thoroughly clean.

Obviously the more often you do this, the cleaners your straighteners – and your hair – will be.
