Duran Duran star Andy Taylor says life has 'extended' after cancer diagnosis

08/11/2023

Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor has thanked a new cancer treatment for ‘effectively’ extending his life for at least ‘five years’.

The English guitarist and songwriter, 62, shot to fame in the 1980s as part of the New Romantic pop group on their first three Platinum-selling albums.

He was first diagnosed with stage four metastatic prostate cancer in the mid-to-late 2010s – his condition is ‘incurable but not immediately life-threatening’.

Andy’s diagnosis and treatment meant that he was absent from the ceremony the night Duran Duran were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

It meant that members Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and John and Roger Taylor attended the ceremony, with Andy sending a letter from home instead.

Following the band’s induction, the guitarist spoke to a doctor who told him that there was a treatment for him that was targeted to see only cancer cells.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: ‘I’ve had prostate cancer for around about eight years and it caught up with me quite badly around about last September.’

‘As hard as I tried – when you do something like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which is like getting knighted for a guitar player, you’ve kind of got to be on 11.’

He continued: ‘You can’t saunter in, and a few days before I couldn’t really stand up and play.  I had to deal with the denial but it was sad.’

However, Andy’s sacrifice that night has apparently paid off, with new specialist cancer treatment apparently extending his life by at least five years.

‘It can’t see healthy cells, and I had my first round of it about – I’m in next week for another round – six weeks ago and it kills stage four cancer in your bones.’

‘And so what it’s effectively done is extend my life for five years.’

He continued, speaking about the band’s reaction: ‘Once I had the support and the team to help me handle [public response], I was able to go through with it.’

‘But the great irony is, I missed the biggest night of my life.’

Duran Duran achieved two UK number ones and 14 UK top 10 singles during their heyday, also producing 11 top 10 albums in that time.
