Dame Judi Dench has led an incredibly illustrious career for more than 60 years, winning an Oscar in 1998 after decades of esteemed roles on screen and on the stage.

Enormous and heavy costumes can sometimes prove extremely difficult to manage on set for actors – something that the 88-year-old has experienced herself.

On Wednesday October 4, Dame Judi appears in a special programme titled Portrait Artist of the Decade for the 10th anniversary of Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year competition.

To mark the occasion, past winners of the show returned to create individual portraits of the undisputed national treasure – and Metro.co.uk can reveal an exclusive clip from the joyful episode.

In the clip, co-presenter Dame Joan Bakewell sat beside Dame Judi for a chat, after explaining to viewers that props and costumes from the film star’s career had been placed around her.

‘Objects, backgrounds and clothing can all help add interest to a portrait,’ the co-host explained, before turning to the celebrity sitter to ask her about one particular prop – her extravagant costume from her Academy Award-winning turn as Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film Shakespeare In Love.

‘This is one of the costumes you wore as Queen Elizabeth. What was it like being inside?’ Dame Joan asked.

‘What do you think?’ Dame Judi quipped, before adding: ‘Hot, and three people had to get me into it.’

The Philomena star continued, explaining how it was tricky to even eat a meal on her own during breaks from filming as a result of the exquisite gown.

‘And also I couldn’t get out of it at lunchtime, so I sat upright like that while they put a spoon in my mouth. If it had gone on very longer I’d have been much thinner,’ she said while laughing.

As the pair continued their conversation, Dame Joan asked the show’s special guest what kind of art she would like to take from the portraits being created of her, as on Portrait Artist of the Year, the celebrity sitters are offered the chance to take one of the artworks home with them.

‘I don’t know. I love the whole idea of it being different, I think it’s wonderful. People having different ways of drawing and different ways of seeing. How exciting is that?’ she replied.

‘It is exciting, no doubt about it,’ Dame Joan agreed.

On the programme, Dame Judi was reported saying that she likes to pretend that she’s 30 years younger than she actually is as part of her approach in the world of show business.

‘We’ve got to keep going and not think of age too much. You have to think you are about 56,’ she said, according to The Express.

‘Also, I don’t make a point of keeping fit. I am very bad at that.’

Portrait Artist of the Decade airs on Wednesday October 4 at 8pm on Sky Arts, Freeview and NOW.
