Bread actor Jean Boht dies aged 91

Jean Boht, who played Nellie Boswell in the sitcom Bread, has died aged 91.

A statement from her family read: ‘It is with overwhelming sadness that we must announce that Jean Boht passed away yesterday, Tuesday September 12.

‘Jean had been battling vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with the indefatigable spirit for which she was both beloved and renowned.’

They added: ‘She was a resident at Denville Hall, the home for members of the theatrical profession.’

She had a long and varied career on stage and screen but it was her role on Bread, created by Carla Lane, for which she was best known.

Running from 1986 to 1991, the show which depicted a working-class family in Liverpool was watched by more than 20 million people at its peak and Boht won a British Comedy Award for best TV comedy actress.

She was the subject of the biographical television show This Is Your Life in 1989.

The actor also starred in many other television projects including Softly, Softly, Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, Grange Hill, and Last of the Summer Wine. Boht made a guest appearance on BBC soap Doctors in 2008.

Although, she focused on TV Boht has also worked in theatre in Embers alongside Jeremy Irons, and on film projects – Mothers and Daughters and Bad Night for the Blues.

Boht was married to Carl Davis, the composer behind the music of the 1990s Pride and Prejudice TV series, who died aged 86, last month.

They married on December 28 1970 and the couple welcomed two daughters: Hannah Louise and Jessie Jo.
