The Rock Just Settled the Debate Over Who Is the Greatest Action Star of All Time

Throughout his TV series Young Rock, Dwayne Johnson has shared insights into his adolescence and early wrestling career that have been full of humor. And in the most recent episode, Johnson—now one of the most bankable blockbuster actors on the planet—pays tribute to two of the men who inspired him in his movie career, and brings back a debate that has been ongoing since the mid-’80s.

We’re talking, of course, about action legends Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. In the clip, which Johnson shared on Instagram, his younger self (played by Uli Latukefu) makes a case for Stallone being the greatest action movie hero of all time, and is met with an equally compelling argument for the qualities of Schwarzenegger.

It’s the kind of conversation that we’ve all had while watching a movie, full of hypothetical scenarios and “but what about” counter-questions. First off, First Blood and Predator proved that both men would be adequately equipped to embark on a rescue mission in unfamiliar jungle terrain. And sure, Stallone kicked ass as John Rambo, but Schwarzenegger was so tough at this point that even the critically panned Red Sonja couldn’t derail his career.

Not that either Schwarzenegger or Stallone would be particularly interested in the outcome of such a debate; the two are fast friends who frequently hung out and posted selfies together prior to the pandemic.

Additionally, Johnson makes it clear in the post that he has no real favorite and admires them both greatly, calling them the true “kings” of action cinema, and acknowledging that they provided a roadmap he was able to follow when he first made the jump from WWE to Hollywood.

“Sly and Arnold were MY HEROES growing up and I will forever be GRATEFUL to them both for being so incredibly kind and supportive of me and my career when I first broke into Hollywood,” he wrote on Instagram. “I just got to be the lucky SOB they welcomed to stand on their shoulders.”
