Taylor Swift reveals her mother has developed a brain tumor as she battles cancer and that it’s a ‘really hard time for us as a family’

Taylor Swift has revealed that her mother has been diagnosed with a brain tumor in her battle with cancer.  

The Lover songstress opened up about the new developments in her mother’s health publicly for the first time, revealing that doctors made the devastating tumor discovery as Swift’s mother Andrea Swift, 62, was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.  

The superstar opened up about how her family has been coping in an interview with Variety ahead of her new documentary Miss Americana.

Andrea was first diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer in 2015. After treatment, she went into remission but the disease came back last year during filming for the documentary. 

‘She was going through chemo, and that’s a hard enough thing for a person to go through,’ Swift explained. ‘While she was going through treatment, they found a brain tumor.’

The superstar opened up about how her family has been coping in an interview with Variety ahead of her new documentary Miss Americana 

And though the family has kept private about the matter, Taylor was candid in the interview, where she explained how ‘hard’ this new turn has been for her family. 

‘[Cancer] is a hard enough thing for a person to go through,’ making the tumor news even tougher.  

Now the family is dealing with a new host of symptoms. 

‘The symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before. So it’s just been a really hard time for us as a family,’ she explained.  

Swift also revealed how she shortened her traditional yearlong tour to support her mother through her diagnosis.

Explaining why she condensed her usual nine-month tour into just several special dates, Taylor said it was mainly to focus on her mom.

‘Yeah, that’s it. That’s the reason. I mean, we don’t know what is going to happen. We don’t know what treatment we’re going to choose. It just was the decision to make at the time, for right now, for what’s going on,’ she said.

The very private star said it was a big decision to speak about her mom’s illness, telling the magazine: ‘Everyone loves their mom; everyone’s got an important mom. But for me, she’s really the guiding force. Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness.’

In the documentary cancer comes up in a light-hearted scene where Andrew Swift welcomes a ‘cancer dog’ into the family, as her way of saying ‘eff you’ to cancer.  

Taylor has been using her music to deal with the family hardship. Her new album Lover features the track Soon You’ll Get Better, a touching tribute to her mom.

In the song she sings lyrics like ‘I didn’t tell you I was scared,’ while also explaining how her mother was making ‘the best of a bad deal.’

She opened up about how difficult it was the write that track during a YouTube Live event back in August.

‘That was really, really hard to write, and it was also just a family decision whether to even put it on the album,’ she said. ‘I think songs that are really hard for you to write emotionally, maybe they’re really hard to write and hard to sing because they’re really true.’

Taylor opened up about her mother’s cancer diagnosis back in 2015 in an emotional Tumblr post.  

Symptoms of brain tumors 

Brain tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous.

Symptoms include: New onset or a change in headache patterns, unexplained nausea or vomiting, vision problems such as blurred vision, double vision or loss of peripheral vision, gradual loss of sensation or movement in an arm or leg, balance difficulty, speech difficulties, confusion, seizures, hearing problems

‘For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine. She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it. The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer,’ the singer wrote. 

‘I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know,’ the star added. 

Andrea successfully completed cancer treatment, but in March 2019 the cancer returned. 

‘My mom is now fighting her battle with it again,’ Swift wrote in her ’30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30′ essay. ‘It’s taught me that there are real problems and then there’s everything else. My mom’s cancer is a real problem. I used to be so anxious about daily ups and downs. I give all of my worry, stress, and prayers to real problems now.’

Taylor’s Netflix doc Miss Americana is due out January 23. It will receive a limited theatrical release come the 31st.
