Stevie Nicks says having an abortion allowed Fleetwood Mac to happen

Stevie Nicks has claimed that her iconic music career might not have happened if she had not been able to have an abortion in 1979.

The Fleetwood Mac star spoke frankly about her experience ending a pregnancy and why she believes women deserve to retain the right in a candid interview.

Speaking to The Guardian, the 72-year-old explained: ‘If I had not had that abortion, I’m pretty sure there would have been no Fleetwood Mac.’

The rock legend was dating musician Don Henley at the time and had already been a member of Fleetwood Mac for five years by that point.

Two years before she chose to end her pregnancy, the band released their iconic album Rumours.

And Stevie explained that the work load she had as part of a Grammy winning band would have been impossible to maintain if she gave birth.

She told the publication: ‘There’s just no way that I could have had a child then, working as hard as we worked constantly. And there were a lot of drugs, I was doing a lot of drugs … I would have had to walk away.

‘And I knew that the music we were going to bring to the world was going to heal so many people’s hearts and make people so happy. And I thought: You know what? That’s really important.’

Stevie recalled: ‘There’s not another band in the world that has two lead women singers, two lead women writers. That was my world’s mission.’

Elswhere in the interview, the rock legend confirmed that both she and bandmate Christine McVie decided not to have kids.

She explained: ‘If Christine was in this room with me right now, she’d tell you that we both made the decision not to have kids and instead follow our musical muse around the world. It’s not my job, it’s who I am.’

The star is hoping that other women continue to have the freedom of choice that she had back in the ’70s.

She told the paper: ‘Abortion rights, that was really my generation’s fight. If President Trump wins this election and puts the judge he wants in, she [Amy Coney Barrett] will absolutely outlaw it and push women back into back-alley abortions.’
